The lunch with Tim seemed to last forever, despite us only being gone for 53 minutes. But hey, who was counting? He told me he wanted to come out and see me, that he missed a friendly face and that running the business had left him feeling lonelier than ever.

“Do you ever get lonely?” he asked me at the very end of our lunch date, as we took the last bites of our hoagies.

“Every body does. It’s knowing how to fill the void without unknowingly deepening it,” I told him, knowing that what he was doing was just that. He didn’t really want to hang around with me, but he was confused, and I was going through something, too, so he made us a perfect little kismet situation in his mind.

“Did leaving California help you fill the void?” he asked in an honest tone, stripped down of ulterior drives or innuendos.

“Yeah, it is helping, slowly,” I smile and squeeze his hand, which average sized in comparison to Wyatt’s. I want him to find what’s missing, but I don’t know how to help. “You’ll meet someone, Tim, you’re a catch.” My net isn’t out for you, but you’re a catch.

He leans back in the metal chair in the deli and folds his arms across his chest. It’s strange being with someone you’ve worked with so much but barely see in person. While on the phone I’m comfortable and know him, in person it feels different; harder to gauge his pensive expression.

“What are you thinking?” he sees me studying him, and I feel bad.

“I was just thinking how it’s strange being here, together, after all this time of really just working together over the phone and email. I feel like I know you and also don’t know you at all.” I take the last drink of my iced tea and blot my lips with the brown napkin at the table. He watches me and suddenly I want to be anywhere but under his gaze.

“We should get back and get to work. Is Allen coming tomorrow for the photos?” I ask casually, rising, smoothing my hands down the front of my jeans. My urge to bolt is surprising me but all I can think about is Wyatt in those worn jeans, crouching behind that table. Warmth spreads down my thighs at the thought and I keep moving, motioning Tim to the double doors and pushing through into the chilly November air. We manage to drive back with talk of only the website, features we both envisioned, layouts I’d liked, and whether or not we have the option to order or buy. I’m happy to talk about this job, after all, it’s the reason why he’s here. And I really don’t want an uncomfortable encounter. I hope he got that I wasn’t into him by telling him he’d meet someone.
