The search was a short one. A twenty-something chick in cowboy boots and a bent up straw cowboy hat, did her own private two-step in front of the jukebox, svelte body swaying drunkenly to the tune of Dance with Who Brung You. Except, obviously, no one brought this little morsel. She was all alone. Excellent.

Alice waved the barkeep over and sent another drink over to the...what did they call them in the wild west? Little Filly. The girl pushed a sweaty lock of blonde hair from her eyes and locked eyes with Alice. Alice, who was, in her own mind, now Roger. A name she got off a mechanic's advertisement on a flyer outside the bar.

Immediately, the girl slid onto the bar stool next to Roger. "Thanks for the beer," she said. "I'm Tansy."

What kind of a name was Tansy? Strange customs in this region. "Roger," Alice said from deep in her throat.

"I ain't seen you around here before." Tansy clinked her bottle of Bud light onto the bottle of Prairie Pirate Bomb Roger held. "Just passing through," Roger said.

Blue eyes raked over Roger, obviously pleased with what they saw. "You sound like...where are you from?"

Alice knew the type. The town bicycle, as the Americans said. Everyone's had a ride. She decided to re-enlist her accent. Women liked that. Especially the town bicycle sort. "England."

"Oh! I never met a guy from another country. England! I'd love to visit there. But hey. Takes big bucks, right?"

Alice pulled out the roll of bills, peeling off a hundred. "Can you break this, mate?" she asked the bartender. She could tell Tansy was imagining all kinds of exotic adventures with a cute English guy who had loads of cash.

Thinking of the advert she saw next to the mechanic's flyer, Roger intoned, "Thought I'd check out the dinosaur quarry while I'm here. You know where that is?"

"Sure! I go there all the time." Tansy lost her balance and almost slid off the stool. "It's a great place to watch falling stars."

Or falling bicycles. "Where is it?"

"I could show you. If you're game."

Oh, I'm game.

Roger took Tansy's elbow in a gentlemanly fashion, guiding her to the lot where the blood-red van was parked. She didn't even notice the lettering and graphic on the van. Redman Renovations.

In no time at all, they were underway, Tansy pointing the way out of town.

As Tansy's eyes cut back to the pallet on the floor of the van, she grinned. "Is this your mobile boudoir?"

Only an American southerner could have made a French word sound like a local colloquialism.

Roger glanced over and put eyes back on the road again, saying, "Sometimes," with a tinge of teasing mystery.

Stupid git. Bred in a region that took for granted the safety of any action. The blithe belief that all were innocent and genuine. What a wonder these feckless American girls were.

The game preserve splayed out to either side of them, as they bucked along in the van. Alice saw the bison in the expanse of meadow, hulking shadows reminiscent of a storied era of American history.
