Judson Farmington lay in the canopied bed he had brought from Boston. The bedroom on the second floor of the house was huge. They were all gathered there, a Mexican woman hovering, dampening the bandage around the head of the old man. Hal, his face swollen, sat in a deep chair, sulking, all his manhood drained.

The eyes of the old man gleamed from deep caverns. “So. You met the legend and you were beaten, eh?”

“We were all beaten,” said Hal in a monotone. “Women, a cripple and a legend. They beat us all.” Brogan spoke for the trio comprising himself, Glass and Symes, all standing, all with thoughts of their own. “T’wasn’t only Buchanan. That gal with the blunderbuss, she’d of blown Symes to bits given half a chance.”

“Men against a crowd like that.” Judson Farmington did not rail at them this time. “It is not in the realm of reason.”

“It happened,” Brogan pointed out.

Judson Farmington said, half to himself, “Yet I cannot fault any of you.”

They stared in disbelief. This was not the loud, irascible tyrant they had known. Hal drained the glass of whiskey he was holding and the serving girl took it and refilled it from a decanter.

Judson said, “Whiskey for all of them.” He tried to prop himself up on the pillows and failed. His son went to his aid and Judson looked up at him. “You tried. You were brave. You stood up to the legend.”

Hal choked, then said, “Thank you, Father.”

“They will be destroyed. All of them.” The voice was cold now, without bombast, deadly.

Brogan said, “’Scuse me, boss, but this is gonna get out and around. In this country news travels.”

“Of course.”

“So that idea of burnin’ them out, cuttin’ ’em down, that won’t work.”

“Of course it won’t. It was a threat. No matter how accidental it may be made to seem, we could not survive.”

“That’s right,” said Brogan. “People wouldn’t hold still for it, not now.”

“And we have forgotten our primary objective. The man Buchanan has thrown us off the real mission.”

“The treasure,” said Hal. He sipped the whiskey. His head throbbed. “Millions, enough for us all.”

“Brogan, Glass, Symes, can you handle our other men? Control them?”

“They ain’t nothin’ but waddies,” Brogan said. “We can keep ’em where they belong.”

“I promise you enough shares to make you rich,” Judson told them. “You will be able to leave the country and start over.”

“Shoot!” said Brogan. “With that kind of money we can start a spread of our own. Bigger men than us have done worse and stayed right here in the West.”

“Whatever your desire.” Judson fixed them with unwavering gaze. “Think about it. You may go now.”

The three gunslingers departed. The old man waited until they were out of the house, then said to his son, “Now they are truly bound to us. Glass wants to kill Buchanan. The others want money. They will be loyal.”

“The treasure,” Hal said. “What do you think, sir?”

“I have seen Buchanan in action. You are a good fighter, son.
