Use Pencil to Build Muscle Memory
A great way to build muscle memory without having to deal with a flexible tip is by using a pencil instead. You can still study and practice the formation of a stroke or letterform and build your muscle memory. Notice when to apply pressure, where to lift, and where the strokes connect in relation to each other and the guidelines.
Using pencil also saves the precious ink in your brush pens!
Explore a New Brush Pen
There is a variety of brush pens great for beginners (see Chapter 1), and each has its own personality. Although all are recommended for beginners, because they are slightly different from each other you may find that you prefer one over another. Some have large tips and others have small ones. Some tips are more flexible than others and therefore a little harder to control. Maybe the barrel of the pen just sits well in your hand or you just like the way it feels as the tip glides across the paper. If you have dedicated some time to one brush pen, maybe this is the time to try a new one. After exploring a few options, you will find one that will become your favorite.
If you are normally heavy-handed, try a brush pen with a slightly stiffer tip. Practicing with a brush pen that may be too flexible for your heavy hand will be harder to control at the beginning stages of your learning. (You’ll have more success with this brush pen after gaining some experience.) For example, choose the Sakura Pigma Brush Pen over the Tombow Dual Brush Pen because it is a tad stiffer.
Large-tipped brush pens require you to draw letters on a large scale compared to that of your regular handwriting. It takes some time to get used to writing relatively large. Try small-tipped brush pens instead if you are having difficulty. You can draw the letters on a smaller scale and the pen itself may be easier to handle.
