I squeezed my eyes shut as I unclipped my bra. Wasn’t that my decision? I was the one getting fat and uncomfortable . . . but it was his baby too.

“I don’t want to know,” I said as I pulled on a tank top.

“How about this then . . .” He stood, uncovering his face as he walked toward me. The fact that he knew I was dressed concerned me, but his steady gaze brushed it aside. “I go with you, and the doctor only tells me. I cross my heart I won’t tell you unless you beg me for it.”

I smiled. “That sounds fair. But don’t go telling everyone on the team, because those guys can’t keep secrets.”

He chuckled. “Fair enough.”

“Good.” I stepped back, bumping the bed. My heart raced as I forced aside the memories of us in bed together. “Goodnight, then.”

He caught my waist and pulled me against him. “Goodnight, Jules.”

He pressed his lips softly against mine. I wanted to moan . . . no, drag him into bed with me and never let him go, but I held it in. Last time I’d opened my feelings to him he ran away, so I’d let him set the pace. He clasped my face and deepened the kiss. His pace just sped up! I wasn’t going to stop him.

He squeezed my boob. I yelped and pushed his hand away.

“Oh, I . . . I shouldn’t have done that.” He backed away. “Goodnight.”

“Lachlan.” I caught his wrist. “It wasn’t you. My boobs hurt most of the time.”

“It doesn’t matter.” He slipped his wrist free. “I’ll see you in the morning.”

He left, leaving me just as confused as ever.

Lachlan moving about getting ready to leave for work woke me, but I stayed in bed. Since most footballers had careers, or if they didn’t, they were at university, my work didn’t start until well into the day. As I dozed, my door opened and Lachie slipped in. He squatted beside me and softly touched my hair. I kept my eyes closed as he sighed. He kissed me head and whispered, “I’m sorry, Jules. I swear I’ll make it all up to you.”
