CHAPTER 9

Buck waited awake for the others to wake as well. As he sat in the murkiness of the night, he thought about what Chief Yellowcrow said. Wolves don’t lose sleep over the opinions of sheep. The wise words spoken sprinted across his mind over and over. If Buck truly thought of himself as a wolf (strong and intelligent), why would he keep the taunting words of Jose Hernan (a weak sheep) on his shoulders? But he didn’t think of himself as a wolf. If he did, he wouldn’t say he was the alpha. He would be, in his opinion, a delta. The delta is a lesser wolf but still showed dominance over the lower-ranking wolves. This position meant below alpha and beta but can take control of leading spars and training when the higher-ranked wolves were too busy to do so. If Buck was a delta, he’d take pride because not only did the delta help the higher-grade wolves, they also went along for hunting and provide for the rest of the pack.

As the natives woke up, Buck started helping with chores. As the morning drifted into noon, Buck found himself by the creek, cooling off from the hot sun. He only had his feet in ankle-deep when Sunshine walked to him from the trees.

“Buck,” she said. “I would like you to meet my brother, Wanders in Grass.”

“You have a brother?”

“Yes. He has been away for some time now. I don’t why. All he said was ‘I have something to take care of’ before he left.”

“Wow. Well then, I’ll be up in a moment.”

Sunshine nodded and turned away followed by Buck after he put both his socks and boots back on his cooled toes. They were side by side, holding hands when stepping in front of her brother.

“You must be Buck,” Wanders In Grass said, shaking Buck’s hand then bowing.

Buck was surprised when he got the handshake. Wanders in Grass must have had some experience with white men, wherever he went. “Yes, and you are Wanders in Grass?”

“Yes.” Wanders in Grass was a tall broad man with long braided hair. He had paint markings along his chest, arms, and face.

“It is to my understanding that you and Singing Sunshine have fallen in love.”

Buck looked at Sunshine and smiled peering back at her brother. “That is true.”

“Welcome to the tribe then, Buck.”

Henry didn’t rest overnight when trudging back to the Bluemen camp. He spent the long dark hours tired and dehydrated; the dark held less heat than the day which was as refreshed as he was gonna get. “Hell,” he said. “Here comes the sun.”

He spent the remaining miles thirsty and sleep-deprived, but it went away when coming over a tall hill, and seeing a group of criminals all laid out at the base, he spurred his horse to run down the hill and met at Jose’s cot where he had a gulp of cold water before speaking.

“Henry, do you have information for me? Ones involving money?” Jose asked with a wicked grin appearing on his face.
