After eggs, they headed over to the rental. Jude insisted Erin use his coat.

She stared at the lone maroon flannel on the hook. “I’m not taking your only coat.”

“I’ll get the other one from across the street,” he replied. She’d forgotten about the loaner that still hung by the door in her cabin.

Reluctantly, she grabbed the coat in question. It fit even larger than his other, blue one. But as soon as she stepped outside, she was glad he’d insisted. Erin wrapped her arms around her chest, her hands hidden deep inside the overlong sleeves.

Etta followed them across the street, chipper at her side, with tail swinging like a pendulum. Jude ducked in and grabbed his other jacket, slipping it on before setting to work. Standing on the deck with her new furry companion, Erin watched him evaluate the damage.

“Be right back,” he said. “Etta, come on.” They walked across the street.

Already missing her furry buddy, Erin went inside to sweep up the broken glass. She tried repeatedly to push up the sleeves of Jude’s jacket, but they kept falling, so she finally shed it and hung it over a chair. Once the glass had been cleared, she cleaned up the rest of the kitchen and let the pot of congealed sauce soak in the sink.

The place felt heavier to her than she remembered. She went around, opening all the wooden shutters to let the light in. It helped a little.

Jude returned with a toolbox, but no Etta. Tapping out the pins in the hinges, he removed the door and leaned it against the side of the cabin. Then he started in on the door frame. When Erin ran out of things to do, she grabbed the maroon flannel and meandered outside.

She watched, thinking she’d probably never need to rehang a door, but it didn’t hurt to see how one might go about doing it. Her keen interest only had a little to do with how sexy he looked while he worked.

He tapped short wooden dowels into the holes where the screws had been. Glue oozed out at the edges.

“Why are you doing that?” she asked.

“Making new holes. Old ones were stripped.” He took a rag and wiped off the excess glue.

“Oh.”

She had no idea what that meant, but he seemed to know what he was talking about. Watching him work, she wondered how he learned to do all this.

As if he could feel her gaze, he paused and looked over at her. “Yeah?” His breath materialized in front of the mouth that had kissed her senseless.

“Anything I can do to help?”

He chuckled, eyes smiling, and it stung. Erin remembered what he’d said the last time she’d offered to help.

She tensed, and turned to hide back inside. “Never mind. I’ll just be—”

“Actually, yeah,” he rushed out, and she paused her retreat. “Can you take Etta for a walk, or run her around for me? I’m not going to have a chance before heading over to the lake.”

Erin noted his sincere expression.
