CHAPTER 15

BRAYDEN

“Just a little more,” I said while nudging a blindfolded Jaz farther into the cubicle. “That’s it, just one more step. Careful with your boots.”

She huffed, “If you keep talking to me like I am three years old, these shoes will be lodged up your narrow behind!”

“Aw!” I laughed. “But you love my narrow behind! The nail marks in it from last night say so.”

Nine days had passed since that blowout and our talk at the river, days where Jaz had gone to her job while I kept upgrading the ranch’s security systems, but she was in my bed at night. We’d made up for lost time four of those nights, only collapsing on the sheets when every ounce of energy had been used up.

Jaz was the sexy, spontaneous, and creative ying to my staid, reluctant, and logical yang; and I was never happier. She pulled me out of the boxes I had jabbed myself in, and I was glad for it. How else would I have ended up in K-Town, singing karaoke at two in the morning?

“There we go.” I grinned. “You can take the blindfold off.”

She whipped the black cloth off and blinked, then blinked again. “We’re shooting stuff?”

“Yes.”

“And you thought a shooting range would be a good idea for a date?” she deadpanned her eyes at a dismal half-mast.

Her tone had the optimistic expectation in my chest plunging to my feet. “Yes, I’d thought”—I raked a hand through my hair—“foolishly, now that I look at it, that you would appreciate a lesson.”

“Well, I don’t appreciate it,” Jaz said before she turned to me, her smile wide. “I love it.”

“You do?”

“Yeah,” she laughed. “You know us country girls—we like guns to kill pests or make other girls leave our boyfriends alone.”

My breath whooshed from me as I handed her the goggle and muffs. “Don’t scare me like that! Anyway, I rented you a generic 9 mm Glock, and I will teach you how to use it. First, the magazine is locked like this.” I held up the magazine filled with the rounds, slotted it into the barrel, and ensured the safety was on. “You ensure safety is on before you aim, and only when your sight is clear do you remove it.”

She nodded and took the gun; her eyes widened at the weight of it. “Wow, that is heavy, isn’t it?”

“It feels light to me,” I said, recalling the massive guns I used to tote around for twelve to sixteen hours a day. “Now fix your eyes on the target and widen your stance.”

I stepped behind her and lifted her hands a little. “Keep the safety on and your finger off the trigger until you have a clear sight of the target, and then you can take the safety off.”

Jaz nodded and removed the safety, then cocked her finger over the trigger.

“There will be a kickback, Jaz. Prepare for it,” I warned.

She nodded. Her hair, up in a ponytail, tickled my nose, which made me smile. Dropping my hands, I said, “Let it rip.
