CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO
Devak. His skin bronze. His dark hair was a little longer now but not by much. He was in his usual cotton outfit with leather laces.
No.
Not Devak.
A hallucination.
Devak was dead.
“You are strong, my prince. You survived long years alone, you left your family behind to protect them, and you still strive to keep them safe. In your life, you’ve faced many storms and survived them. You will survive this.”
Matthew tried to speak but he was too weak, too overwhelmed, to open his mouth. Devak ran his hand over Matthew’s brand. His warm fingers felt so good. Tears fell down Matthew’s face.
“You’re powerful. You have it in you to fight him. Stop thinking like a vampire and start thinking like an incubus.”
Matthew had no idea how to stop him. Malarath was too powerful.
“He’s shown you his weakness,” Devak continued.
His people…Malarath drew his power from his people. They worshiped him because they were tied to him. But what if they weren’t? What would happen if they turned against him? Then he’d just be a normal incubus. An ancient incubus, but one that could be killed.
A small thread of hope weaved through him.
But…he was about to die. The sun was going to kill him. The sky began to turn a light purple and the stars faded away.
Devak smiled down at him, his eyes warm and friendly. “I love you, my prince.” He leaned down and kissed Matthew’s forehead.
The hallucination faded away. Matthew tried to call out. He wanted Devak back, even if he wasn’t real. He needed him to stay right now. He needed someone.
In his delirious condition, Matthew slowly realized that there was another incubus standing next to the stone. Matthew struggled to get away from it. He couldn’t take another one in him. It was already too much.
“Still yourself, young one,” a deep voice said, soothing him. “I’m not going to harm you.”
Tarrick wrapped a warm blanket around Matthew’s body and scooped him into his arms, cradling him. With Tarrick in his incubus form, Matthew felt small against his chest, but found it comforting. Safe.
Tarrick crossed the grassy field and brought Matthew back into the tower right before the sun broke the horizon. Matthew didn’t fall asleep. He couldn’t. He wanted to, god, he wanted the sweet release of nothingness but it didn’t come to him.
He couldn’t move or speak in Tarrick’s arms but he watched his face. Tarrick looked down often, as if checking to see if Matthew was okay.
When they entered the general’s room, Tarrick lay him down on his bed, leaving him wrapped tight in the blanket.
“You should be sleeping,” he said, sounding genuinely worried. Maybe it was just a trick so that Matthew would trust him again, but right now he didn’t have the faculty to figure out Tarrick’s motivations.
Tarrick frowned and left Matthew’s field of vision. Water began to run, and when Tarrick returned, he was dressed only in tight underwear.
“I’m going to bathe you.” Tarrick removed Matthew’s boots, unwrapping him from the now-dirty blanket, and carried him into the bathroom.
