Lauren leaned over and whispered to Charlie, “Make sure you keep a hand on your pistol as you sleep so someone doesn’t try to take it,” she said.

“Okay.”

With her hand on her Colt, Lauren closed her eyes, intending only to rest for a moment. She was startled awake when she felt something brush against her arm. She bolted upright, drawing her Peacemaker.

“I’m sorry. You looked cold the way you were hugging herself.” Charlie was holding one of the towels in his hand. He held it out to her.

“I’m sorry,” Lauren said, taking the towel from him. “I’m a little jumpy after….” She couldn’t bring herself to say it.

“No problem,” Charlie said.

“How are you feeling? Are you breathing easier now?" Lauren asked him.

“It’s better. Thanks for taking me to the hospital. The nebulizer helped.”

“If you start having trouble again, let me know as soon as possible. We don’t want it to get that bad again.”

“I will, but I think the inhaler is working well,” Charlie said. He leaned over and stretched out.

Sam would be so proud of his son. He really was a great kid. Sam was looking forward to doing fun stuff this trip and getting in some quality father-son time. When Lauren watched Sam and Charlie together, she sometimes regretted she hadn’t started a family with him. However, if things got as bad in the world as he and Vince had foreseen, she was glad she hadn’t.

Lauren looked around for Cody. He was near the opposite wall, curled up on four chairs asleep. No one had been watching out for trouble. Sam would have posted a guard or something and set shifts. She wasn’t sure what good that would do them in a room full of people. She and Charlie were the only ones with guns, and she wasn’t about to give the Glock to Cody. She needed to figure something out. Most of all, she needed sleep. It could take days to get home if Sam didn’t come for them. Did her parents have days? Thinking about Sam and her parents was torture.

She needed to find a way to get home. There had to be an old car or truck somewhere—hell, she’d settle for a dirt bike or even a bicycle. Finding transportation would be her goal when daylight came, even if she had to leave Cody and Casey behind.

Lauren lay back on her makeshift pillow and pulled a towel over her arms. Her mind immediately went to Sam. A crushing ache tugged at her heart. She had no idea where he was or what kind of craziness he had encountered. She couldn’t quit thinking about how bad things could get for him in Atlanta. She took solace knowing that he had his three-day get-home bag. If the Bronco still ran after the EMP or whatever this was, he’d likely be home right now, caring for her parents and worried sick about her and Charlie. He’d come for them. In the morning. He’d come for them.

Lauren listened to the whispers of the elderly couple for a few minutes before drifting off to sleep.
