The worst part for players came Tuesday. The film session.

As always, Landry showed each play to the entire team, running it once so they could see the outcome, then rewinding it again and again to focus on specific players. A single play could be shown 12 times—pure agony for anyone who knew a busted play was his fault, pure boredom for anyone not involved. Some guys would have sweat rings that met in the middle of their gray, team-issued T-shirts. Others swallowed barbiturates to keep them sedated. The whole viewing routinely took three to four hours.

The projector got a workout showing a play from the second quarter: a run by Hill on third-and-goal from the 2, with Dallas trailing 14–3.

“We failed to make it because we missed three blocks,” Landry said. “That tends to stop you.”

Seeing the play live, Landry had been so disgusted that he sent out Mike Clark for a nine-yard field goal instead of going for it on fourth down. That drew the loudest boos of the day.

Most of this viewing was spent watching the defense.

Landry’s scheme required players to follow a script—being “coordinated,” in his vernacular. If things went as planned, two or three players would be in position to stop every play. Guys could violate the system to try making a tackle or an interception, but it better work. Against Washington, there had been too much freelancing that didn’t work.

“One man would make a mistake in his area and they’d go for ten, eleven, twelve yards,” defensive line coach Ernie Stautner said. “Then we’d get panicky, and somebody would try to compensate for somebody else. They’d just hit us at the right place at the right time.”
