Adam was well accustomed to sleeping in beds other than his own, in hotel beds and in the beds of his hook ups. He was a pro at being able to fall asleep anywhere, anytime: on planes or buses during road trips, or even sitting upright in a chair during strategy meetings. Allison’s bed was no different than any other. It was soft and inviting—and the company was great, too. But he couldn’t fall asleep beside her. His body was humming with electricity and buzzing with hormones. He never slept next to a woman he didn’t first have sex with.

“Are you up?” Allison’s voice was softer than a whisper.

“Yeah,” he answered, feeling more awake than ever. He could be “up” in no time if Allison wasn’t careful.

“Good, then I won’t wake you.” She violently kicked off the comforter. “It’s so hot. You’re hot.” There was a short pause. “I mean, you give off a lot of heat.”

He chuckled, and his laughter shook the bed. Why was she being timid now? “It’s okay, you can think I’m hot.”

“That’s not what I meant,” she mumbled.

“I know what you meant.” He stretched and then relaxed as he lay on his back. “Did I wake you?”

“No. I can’t really sleep.”

“Do you want me to go?”

Her answer came quickly and loudly. “No!” She calmed herself a little. “No. I don’t want to be alone.”

She must have been quite scared if she wanted Adam to stay with her, since she pushed him away at every opportunity. Allison would never have let Adam into her apartment under any other circumstance. Well, she did owe him dinner, so maybe for that.

He rolled onto his side and faced her. “Okay.” Adam could make out her silhouette, backlit by a streetlight that shone through the blinds. She was on her side and looking at him. He had always seen Allison as feisty and sassy, full of spirit and fire.

That night, though, Adam saw Allison as someone with some depth. This wasn’t some embarrassing story giving him a peek behind the curtain. She had taken a real hit to her confidence, and she was deflated, defeated. Allison was scared.

Adam resisted the urge to reach out and touch her face, to comfort her. “Then I’m not going anywhere.”

“Thank you.”

Just then, they heard footsteps outside. The sounds got louder as someone approached Allison’s front door. A shadow was cast into the room by a body passing by the front window. Allison held her breath, and Adam tensed. Slowly, the shadow disappeared and the footsteps started to get softer, as the person outside kept walking.

She let out her relief in a big sigh, and Adam relaxed. False alarm.

“This sucks,” she said, curling her body into the fetal position.

“Don’t worry. It’ll be okay.” He was making false promises, but he had to say something to make her feel better. It was kind of his fault for freaking her out in the first place. Of course he hadn’t meant to; he had a bad habit of not thinking before speaking.
