I glance back at the Patroller, still unconscious and cuffed, then finish zipping him up in the bag Coral vacated. The keys jingle in my hand as I spin them around a finger, and kick the Patroller’s uniform into a pile in the corner of the van.

Coral sits in the passenger seat, huffing from the effort it took to climb down from the bag she was in and walk the short distance to the cab. She needs help. She needs Thea.

“Dude, that was awesome.” She gives me a crooked smile.

“Yeah, it was. We make quite the team.” I laugh and bump Lowmar’s shoulder where he stands in the door between the cab and the back, then give Coral a high five. Allowing myself to bounce into the driver's seat, I buckle. “All right, where to, Miss Reeves?”

The key slides smoothly into the ignition. I can’t seem to wipe the smile from my face. The steering wheel feels right beneath my hands. It’s about time I take control of my own life.

“Let's drop off the others at my mom's house. We’ll have to find a new place to set up camp.”

“Your wish is my command.”

Coral smiles, laughing as I throw the van into a turn. The wheels kick up dirt and rocks in a cloud behind us, and Lowmar’s knuckles grow white as he grips the seats to keep himself upright.

Coral hits the dial on the radio and turns it to the ’80s station, crowing, “Yes!” when Bon Jovi’s Livin’ On A Prayer blares from the speakers.

We pull up in the alley behind Coral’s house, then Lowmar helps me take the remaining Blighted in through the back door. The Patroller wakes and starts to mumble through the gag we tied around his mouth, but he won’t be going anywhere for a while. I open the passenger door to offer a hand to Coral.

She shakes her head at me and huffs out an incredulous laugh. “There’s no way you're going to leave me behind.” She smiles but it sours, transforming into a grimace as she begins coughing into her hand.

“Sorry,” she says when it abates. There’s blood spattering her lips.

“Coral, you're going to have to stay. I won’t be able to live with myself if Muriel gets her hands on you, too.”

She shakes her head at me.

A large part of me wishes I could take her with me. If she was healthy, maybe I could. I reach for her hand and open it with gentle fingers. Blood is smeared across her palm. Coral’s head hangs.

“Hey.” I lift her chin to look at me. “I’ll come back.”

I help her down. Her muscles quake with even that feeble effort, so I swing her into my arms, cradling her body against mine. Thin arms wrap around my neck as I carry her inside to lay her on the couch. She looks so sad. I rub my thumb down her overly warm cheek, then turn to leave.

“Calix,” she calls, and I turn back to face her. “Be safe.
