TRAVIS SPENT A GOOD hour in the gym working out. The place was empty besides one other person doing rehab. Checking the clock, he realized it was almost time for practice. He finished his last rep and put the weights back. Hurrying down to the locker room, he found it empty. He must’ve been super early.

He changed and put on his pads. Still no one else was here. He checked his watch—it was now ten-thirty, and practice was to start at ten.

Travis searched the back rooms. No teammates. No team chef. No Coach.

What was going on?

Maybe he had the wrong time. The best place to check was the front desk. He hurried out into the lobby. The bonus of going to the front desk was that he got to see Morgan.

“Hey, cutie.” He grinned, leaning on the desk.

“Hey rookie, what can I help you with?” she teased.

He cringed at that nickname. “I’ll answer to any other name, as long as you stop calling me that.”

“Oh come on, I think it’s kind of cute,” she said.

Rolling his eyes, he continued, “Did practice get pushed back?”

“Um, I don’t know, let me check.” She searched the schedule. “What time was it supposed to start?”

“Ten.”

“Um, I hate to tell you this,” Morgan winced as she spoke.

The tone of her voice made him suspect that Morris was involved. “I don’t think anything you say will surprise me.”

“It appears that today’s practice was cancelled.”

“Of course it was,” he said flatly. “Any idea when it was canceled?”

“Looks like it was canceled at seven this morning.” She shrugged. “I’m guessing you didn’t get the message?”

“No. And I’m guessing I didn’t get the message sent to me on purpose.”

“Oh no, that can’t be it.”

“It is very cute how naïve you are.” He grinned to hide how annoyed he truly was. “I got pranked, again. And I’m pretty sure this one was a revenge prank.”

“Oh, you don’t think—”

“I’m not sure how he pulled it off, but I do think your uncle was in on it. Just a little bit of punishment for last night.”

“I’m sorry.” She frowned, and it made his heart melt. She wasn’t responsible, and it wasn’t fair that Morris had done this and made her feel that way.

“It’s not your fault. It was a prank, haha. Good one. He got me.” He grinned at her. “But the joke’s on him, because I got to spend my morning with you.”

“Very true.” Her frown turned into a little smile, and his heart lifted.

“They prank the rookies all the time, you know,” Katie added.

“Oh trust me, I know. I’ve been the butt of all the pranks over the past week. This wasn’t just any prank.”

Morgan whispered something in Katie’s ear.

“Oh.” Katie’s eyes bugged out, as Morgan finished whatever she was saying. “Yeah, today’s prank was all for you. Sorry.”

“I guess I’m going to go back to bed. Can we get together after you’re done?” There was nothing he could do about the pranks. And maybe there was something to what
