SHARING SUCCESS

Pudsey Bear

Greggs sold 650,000 bears as part of its fundraising campaign for Children in Need, which raised over £1 million in 2012

A key element of our values had been to share success (Lesson Number Ten) with employees and the community. Throughout the process of preparing the company for a public quotation, we had always been keen to ensure that employees should be able to participate in the opportunities it would offer. We had already prepared the ground to some extent, because in 1981 we had introduced a share-purchase scheme under which employees with at least two years’ service were able to convert their profit-share entitlement into shares in Greggs. This enabled them to save tax on their profit share, provided they held the shares for seven years. It was an excellent scheme, which enabled employees to save and participate in the growth of Greggs, and provided them with a long-term incentive.
