Chapter Twenty-Nine
Alan was back in front of the T-Rex enclosure, unable to stay away from the ailing dinosaurs despite the brain-sapping exhaustion that had taken over every molecule in his body and threatened to drag his legs out from beneath him at any moment. The afternoon had been interminable, every task tainted by what Leonard had told him during their meeting. Jason had left just fifteen minutes ago and it was already after 10 pm. Mary had called a few hours ago and he was expecting another call from her soon. She was worried about him, and she wasnât trying to hide it.
He had pulled his chair up close to the tank so he could rest while he observed, which was undoubtedly an oxymoron. He was anything but relaxed as he watched the remaining juveniles wander listlessly around the enclosure. The tank was currently bathed in shadowy light so they could sleep with minimal disruption, although none of them showed any interest in lying down to sleep. He knew he was second-guessing every little movement the creatures made, seeing signs of deterioration and illness where none might exist. It was the male that he was the most worried about. If this one died, they would be left with no opportunity for the dinosaurs to breed naturally and extend the species. Leonard may have thrown around his overblown platitudes about the first steps having been taken in the path towards future experimentation, but it had taken a damned long time to get to this point. Retracing those steps and starting again felt like a marathon, and it was a race he knew he wouldnât have the chance to participate in.
One of the little female dinosaurs, perhaps even the brash one that had nipped Jason earlier, came up to the glass and pressed its snout against the transparent wall that stood between them. Alan felt a smile twitch at his lips as the creature gazed solemnly out at him. He was captivated by that inquisitive yellow stare, by the faint markings on its sides that were growing more pronounced by the day, and by those comical, useless dangling forearms. Much like the Ceratosaurus specimens, he had noticed that the T-Rex juveniles sometimes stooped and used their forearms when feeding, but mostly the arms seemed to be an unnecessary appendage. Their powerful jaws, strong hind legs, and mobile tails did most of the manual work for them as they went about the important day-to-day business of living. This beautiful, perfect little dinosaur was here because of him. No amount of money and corporate tomfoolery could ever take that away.
He spun around in his chair as the Ceratosaurus fledglings, all of which had been screeching non-stop since Jason gave them their last meal of the day at 9.30 pm, suddenly and dramatically increased the volume and pitch of their cries. It now sounded as if they were crying in alarm rather than with hunger. He hurriedly went across to their tank and switched on the light beside it, instantly flooding the enclosure with an all-illuminating glare.
