Chapter Eight

Rory climbed back in her Jeep and drove to the clinic. The area in front was filled with cars. She parked off to one side and sat there, not really sure what to do. She glanced at her watch. Four o’clock. Maybe she should go to the mining site first and then come back here so Daniel could show her where she’d be staying.

The solution to that minor dilemma was reached when Doris stepped into the doorway and waved at her to come in.

Rory slipped her keys out of the ignition and, leaving her purse and everything else in the Jeep, locked it and went into the clinic.

The chairs lined up against the wall held mostly mothers and children. There were only a couple of men.

All eyes seemed to follow Rory as she crossed the room to Doris.

“Daniel is going to be at least another hour,” said Doris. “If you’re going to be waiting for him anyway, I thought maybe I could put you to work.”

“Sure. What would you like me do do?”

Doris smiled. “I love people who ask questions like that.” She handed Rory an armload of files. “These go in the second cabinet, top drawer. Alphabetize them by last name.”

Rory carried them across the room, aware of being watched. She didn’t know whether to ignore it or acknowledge it. So she did a little of both by looking at a person here and a person there and smiling at them as she filed. There were a few smiles in return, but not many. Word had apparently gotten out.

Daniel came out of the examining room for his next patient and saw Rory. He and Doris had a quiet thirty-second conference. Then, to Rory’s surprise, Daniel walked over to her and put his hand at her waist protectively as he turned her completely toward the waiting room. “Everyone,” he said, “as I’m sure most of you already know, this is Rory Milbourne. She’s here representing the mining company that wants to do work in our hills. My grandfather and I have invited her to stay here for as long as she cares to. We hope all of you will try to make her feel welcome, regardless of how you feel about the mining.”

There were still some who didn’t look happy, but there seemed to be a lessening of the hostility.

Daniel gave her waist an encouraging squeeze, then dropped his hand and walked away from her. He stopped in front of some of the children, hunkering down in front of them so they were eye level, and asked them questions about how they were feeling. It was clear to Rory that the children and parents thought the world of Daniel. He picked up one child and carried her into the examining room as the mother followed behind.

Rory watched until the door closed behind them. As she looked away, she caught Doris’s eye. The older woman smiled knowingly and went back to her paperwork.

By the time Rory had finished her filing, Daniel was down to his last patient.
