AdamâPercy worked at DGT for several years until he became extremely hostile toward Ev. He accused Ev of stealing his research but it was proven that it was the other way around.
Margaux is a French scientist with a similar field of study. She visited Ev more than a year ago wanting to work together, but he turned her down.
âWhat kind of name is Mar-Gox?â Javi asked.
âItâs pronounced Mar-Go.â
âSilly French people with their weird spellings.â
âYeah, like the English language is so perfect,â I chuckled.
âGood point.â
The second email was large and took time to download. Finally, I got it open and began checking out every DGT staff member one by one. It was definitely not an interesting task and by the time I finished the Bs I was totally bored.
Thankfully I found what I was searching for in the Ds. Leo Dennison, age twenty-nine, had worked at DGT for a year and two months.
âHow do we prove this guyâs part of the Prava?â Javi paced to the window and stared out.
I sat back in my chair and stroked my chin. âI wonder if The Oregonian has done any articles on them.â The daily paper wasnât the New York Times but it was decent.
âTry the website.â
A few minutes later, Javi stood over my shoulder as we read a short online story about the radical faction.
âThere he is. Thatâs him.â I pointed to a man in the middle of a posed group shot with Alik, Kuzma, and a few others. There were first names but no last. It listed Leo Dennison as Leonid.
âWhat are the chances the reporter has their last names?â Javi stood up and put a hand on my shoulder for a second. I tried not to focus on the contact and how it made me feel. âHe may have agreed to keep their names out of it.â
I grabbed my cell, called The Oregonian, and requested to talk to Selena Reese. I was rebuffed until I mentioned my name, then I was sent right through.
âThis is Selena,â she answered.
âHello, Ms. Reese, this is Adam Brand.â
âHow can I help you, sir?â
âA while back you wrote a story on the Prava and took a picture with them.â
âThatâs correct.â
âI noticed you didnât include their last names.â
âYes,â she said. âThey only agreed to talk to me if I would use just their first names.â
âBut the fact that you didnât print them doesnât mean you werenât aware what they were.â
She paused and chuckled. âIf youâre asking me if I know what their last names are, then yes, I do.â
âI need that information. I wonât publicize itâhell, I wonât tell a soul.â
âIâm sure you realize you are a highly sought-after man, Mr. Brand. Youâre notoriously publicity shy and have never sat down for a one-on-one interview.â
Her bravado impressed me. âAre we talking a quid pro quo situation, Ms. Reese?â
âNot necessarily. Iâll give you the names regardless. Iâm hoping youâll consider allowing me into your home for an interview. Iâm not after dirt, just an in-depth profile.â
âIf I agree to such an interview, you will be the first person I call.
