Chapter 23
Thursday 3rd May 1990
Yorkshire Cricket in TV Race Rumpus --Yorkshire County Cricket Club was at the centre of a race row today following comments made on TV by senior member Brian Close. The club was featured in a BBC documentary 'The Race Game' which examined attitudes to race within all aspects of sport. Mr Close, chairman of the club's cricket committee was asked in an interview why no Yorkshire born black or Asian players had ever been picked to play for the county. He replied that none had ever been good enough to play 1st class cricket.
£100 Bid to See Big Match -- Leeds United fans travelling to Bournemouth for Saturday's promotion deciding match are said to be paying more than £100 a time for Bournemouth AFC tickets and members cards in a bid to gain entry to Dean Court. Leeds United administration manager Alan Roberts said he had seen tickets to areas of the ground reserved for Bournemouth supporters purchased by United fans at vastly inflated prices.
"Is that you Julie?" the sound of the latch clicking roused Christine Yardsley from her snooze.
"Julieâ¦loveâ¦?"
Christine hadn't seen Julie all week but didn't want to call her office in case they didn't realise she was off. Poor lass had enough problems without getting into trouble at work. Supplies in the freezer were getting low and Christine had been having her tea with no milk for two days, but that was forgotten when her eldest son's head appeared round the corner of the door.
"Neil! Where've you been love?"
"Hi mam. I've been staying at a Hursty's. Thought it best I get away for a few days..."
"Oh Neil, I'm so sorry love. I made a terrible mistake. I should have told youâ¦"
"It's alright mam. It was a shock that's all. I've had time to think now. We can sit down and talk about it properly another time, but I'm in a rush now. Hursty is waiting for me in' van. I just need to pick up a few things."
Neil squeezed his mother's hand then disappeared into the back bedroom where she could hear him pulling his old Head bag out of the wardrobe.
"I don't know what I was thinking..." Christine called, her voice too soft to hear. When Neil returned she was crying.
"Look mam, my dad was Dennis Yardsley and that hasn't changed. On the day he died he made me promise to look after you and Stu, and thatâs what I'm going to do." He knelt in front of his mother and took hold of her hands.
"Stu's in trouble mum, big trouble. He's going to walk into a trap in Bournemouth at' weekend and I need to get to him first to warn him. If he calls here, tell him to keep his head down and stay away from' ground on Saturday. We're kipping in the van so I've no way for him to contact me. Tell him I'll wait at' end of ' pier at seven tomorrow night."
"What if he doesn't call?
"I'll have to try and catch him at' ground.
