CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Zan stood, pulling Daisy up with him. He framed her face, and before he could kiss her she surprised him by pressing her sweet mouth on his. He pulled her closer, resting his forehead against hers.

“I’m going to get hard in the fruit section of the supermarket.” He buried his face in her hair and inhaled. “I’ll never think of coconut or mango without thinking of you.”

“Do you go to the supermarket?” She pulled back, a grin hugging her kissable lips. “Which one? Are you a Ralphs kind of guy? Whole Foods?” She smacked the side of her head. “Money a bit tight. Grocery Outlet.” She shoulder bumped him. “Very thrifty.”

He zoomed in on her mouth. He shook his head. “You and your mouth.” His lips twitched as he tried not to smile. “I don’t go to the supermarket. I have a person who does all that shit.”

She shook her head. “Of course you do. I expect you outsource everything.”

He did. If he could outsource sleep, his life would be perfect.

“I don’t think we made the treasure hunt,” she said, tracing the tat under his heart. “Praesidio.” He tried not to shiver at her touch. Tried and failed. Brown eyes hooked him. “What does that mean?”

“‘Protect’ in Latin,” he said quietly.

A questioning look in her eye. Not a night he talked about. Only with his boarding school brothers when someone needed their help, but with Daisy she pulled words from him. Made him want to connect.

“At boarding school, a group of us boarders didn’t protect one of our own, and he paid a heavy price.”

That fucking memory slammed into him unexpectedly with all the finesse of a hand grenade. Seems like tonight he couldn’t hold the memory back. Was it because he was in a safe place?

Regret and rage wrapped around his chest and pulled tight. He remembered everything.
