In the manor, the master stood before the window of his workroom and looked down on the garden. Vik was alone. Vik was alone and he had no time to go to him. Angrily, he spurned the view and returned to the table with the single object on it—a wine bottle with an elegant label.

“Pehtre Vineyards,” he whispered.

He touched the label lightly and then dropped his hand. Rook had drunk from this bottle. His spit had lathered the glass mouth, had mixed with the dregs of the wine. Marun bent over the open neck and breathed the scent from it. The residue of the wine had gone sour inside. He straightened slowly.

Without a name to add to the spit, the bottle hadn’t been of much use to him. It had become somewhat more useful last night. He could not enslave Rook with a name passed to him offhandedly. For that, a name had to be acquired with purpose. Still, a name passed along second hand, so to speak, had its uses. With it, Rook could be found. Marun smiled viciously.

He glanced toward the fireplace. The ward to keep out thieves danced as strongly as when he’d spelled it into existence last night. This time he’d set the fiery dervishes marching about the andiron. Satisfied, he picked the bottle up and left the room. The magic upon the door sealed it behind him. He had learned his lesson. His workroom would not be violated again, by window, door, or chimney. Especially by chimney.

He headed down the hall. He had slaves to educate. They would taste the spit of their next victim, the spit on the bottle mouth, the spit in the dregs. They would hear the name of their next meal. Tonight, his ghouls would hunt.
