Like A Stranger in the Night

The beating of drums has finally died down outside of Aella’s window. It was a soundtrack that kept record of the happenings of the night.

Though she had problems of her own to worry about, she couldn’t help but get caught up in the strange energy that permeated the village like a dense fog.

Her parents had long since retired to their chambers for the night, laughing and drunk off their wine.

As much as she hated to admit it—especially because of how guarded he was upon his long awaited return, she had always hoped that Leandro would take an interest in her. After today, though, she was sure he only considered her a friend. And she wasn’t certain they were still even that much.

Aella let out a frustrated sigh as beads of sweat trickled from her forehead. She stared out at the ominous full moon. She couldn’t take her eyes away from it as her hand grazed the nape of her neck and then her shoulders, massaging and rubbing her woes away. She rolled her head around to better reach the tender spots, enjoying the touch.

She had been through a lot in the past few weeks and had the bruises to prove it. Now, in the solitude of her own bedroom she could imagine the comforting touch of a lover.

She let out a satisfied sigh.
