I tripped over my own feet, making it to the phone just in time. “Hello!”

“Lors, hey there.”

“Uncle Jase. Hi!” I composed myself quickly, correcting that with, “I mean, King Jason—”

“You don’t have to call me that, Lors—you’re family.”

“And you’re the King, I will always have to bow to you,” I said, grinning impishly.

“Touché.” He laughed.

“So what can I do for you, Your Majesty?” I asked, resting one knee on the edge of my couch, trying to decide if I should sit down.

“I wanted to congratulate you. Lilith told me you called.”

I looked down at my engagement ring, snuggling my cheek into Ric’s as he rested it over my shoulder, his arms wrapping my waist. “Yeah, I was hoping to tell you myself, but—”

“I’m sorry. I’ve been pretty busy since the coronation.”

“So how is everything going now? I mean, how are you finding it all—?”

“It’s different, that’s for sure.” He laughed, although it sounded like a release of tension. “Sometimes I’m not sure if I have the gut for this job.”

“You don’t.” I laughed. “With you on the throne, people will start getting away with murder because you’re too nice to torture them.”

“I am, yes, but my wife is tougher than she looks.”

Even Eric laughed at that, clearly listening in over my shoulder. “I’m sorry we couldn’t make the wedding, Uncle Jason—”

“Don’t sweat it. It was all pretty sudden.”

“Why though?” I turned out from Ric’s arms and sat down on the couch, motioning for him to come sit with me. “Why did you rush into it?”

“Lilith wanted our position secure. Being that she’s technically new and that I was once the old King’s brother, she just wanted to make sure there were no questions about the validity of her claim to the throne—or mine.”

“Fair enough, I suppose. But I would like to have been there when you finally said your vows.”

“Well, your dad will be home tomorrow and he can show you the pictures.”

“I look forward to it. I already saw the few that Lily posted on Facebook.”

“Yeah? That one by the oak tree?”

“Yeah.” I smiled fondly. “You two looked really happy.”

“We were,” he said. “We are, I mean,” he corrected with a boyish laugh.

“So?” I huffed, not sure I wanted the answer to this question, since it had been the same every time we spoke in the last few months. “Any word on Mum yet?”

“Um… that’s the main reason I’m calling,” he said, pausing for a long moment. “I wasn’t sure what to tell David while he was here…”

“What do you mean?” I stood up, and Ric stood too. “What’s happened?”

“Nothing bad, don’t worry,” he said quickly. “It’s just… I left Falcon in charge of her case, and he and Drake thought it best not to say anything to David while he was here because we didn’t know what her mental state would be like—”

“Uncle Jason.” My blood charged like a hot bullet through my veins. “Is she awake?”

“She woke up two weeks ago—”

“What!”

“She can’t talk or stay awake longer than five minutes,” he said, while I freaked out, crying into Ric’s shoulder.
