* * * * *

After carrying her to the bed and helping her out of her dress, I go to the bathroom to discard the rubber.

I don't notice the problem immediately because my brain is half dead from pleasure. The other is already thinking about curling around Stacey and what it would be like to wake up with her, not just in the morning, but every morning…maybe forever. It's a crazy thought, but I like the idea of it.

I'm distracted enough that I don't notice the torn rubber in my hand—what remains of it, anyway.

My breath lodges in my chest as I stare at it. I have to remind myself to breathe before I can throw it away. Then I wash my hands and hitch my trousers back up.

Stacey is curled up under the blankets, facing the bathroom. She's left half the bed for me, and the inviting smile on her face makes me want to punch something. Instead of curling up around her and trying to forget all the shit problems I've made, I have to deal with another problem.

“Stacey…”

A furrow forms between her brows, and she pushes onto her elbow.

I notice the deep silvery blue chemise she's pulled on, but I'm too focused on the problem to admire it.

"The rubber…" I clear my throat. "The condom broke. It's probably…."

She sat up and swung her legs over the side of the bed.

I wait as she comes to stand in front of me. “Broke?”

“Yeah. It tore. Completely.”

She disappears into the bathroom and closes the door. There’s nothing but silence for a few minutes, then I hear water running. She comes back out a few minutes, her cheeks burning red. “It’s…I got…it’s dealt with.”

“I…are you on the pill?” I ask.

"No." She walks over to the window and stares outside.

“Can you take the morning-after pill?”

She glances over her shoulder at me. "No—I have a terrible reaction to anything hormone-based, but it shouldn't be a problem. I keep track of my cycle. We should be fine." She looks away again. "My last serious boyfriend was more than a year ago, and they tested me after we broke up—he'd been cheating. I don't have any diseases."

“I…I’m clear there, too. I tested myself a few months ago. “I haven’t been with anybody since then. Listen, if something happens—”

“Nothing will. You know, I’m tired.” Her voice is strained. “I’m sure everything will be fine. But I’m tired.”

She won’t look at me now.

I want to make her.

But I've caused enough problems tonight, and it's not like I won't cause more if she finds out the truth.
