Chapter Eight

The Third Date

HANNI’S WORK WEEK picked up steam right before his weekend, much to his annoyance. A patrol found two overdose cases over the course of two days in the exact same neighborhood. Since the new treaties had been signed between the empires and drugs were decriminalized, it had been a while since they’d needed a detective digging into any drug-related deaths.

Hanni was called to the scene. He spent one day investigating and another looking into any leads. The evidence pointed to a new strain of some hallucinogenic party drug which helped explain why all the victims were Betas so far. The party and rave scenes in Luxor tended to be pretty Beta dominated.

By the time Friday hit, Hanni was still at his desk doing overtime. He clocked in for a few hours in the early morning. He was checking up on the newly delivered lab reports outlining the chemical compound found in the drug when his phone vibrated. The screen lit up with a text from Jaemin.

JY: Thursday’s supposed to be the start of the weekend for you, isn’t it?

Hanni saw the message but his attention quickly flicked back to his computer screen. He just wanted to finish tracing possible origin sources within Luxor City for the chemicals that went into making the party drug. Once that was done, then and only then would he let Jaemin Yi become a distraction.

Jaemin seemed to have other plans and he was clearly not one to be ignored. He sent another set of messages through that had Hanni’s phone buzzing.

JY: Are you still working?

Hanni?

You work too hard, babe. (^u~)

I’ll have a word with that boss of yours.

Get her to lay off you a bit.

HN: Don’t you dare…

Not one minute after he replied to that message, Hanni’s phone rang.

“What?” he answered, his voice purposefully clipped as he sneered into the receiver.

Jaemin’s deep chuckle sounded through his speaker. “Damn, babe. Aren’t I the one who should be pissed off after the way you left me high and dry?”

Hanni leaned back in his chair and bit his lip to hold in a chuckle of his own. He had to admit, it had been a bit of a thrill leaving an Alpha as powerful as Jaemin Yi with blue balls. “Don’t show up at my office unannounced and I won’t leave you unattended.”

Jaemin hummed, his voice filtering melodiously through the line. “I do like the idea of you tending to me.”

“What do you want, Jaemin?” Hanni cut in before the Alpha’s mind went too far into the gutter.

“What are you doing later? I want to take you out tonight.”

Hanni thoughtfully licked his lips. He must have been quiet for a bit too long because Jaemin’s voice quickly sounded again.

“Hanni?”

“I’m thinking.”

Jaemin chuckled again. “What needs thinking about?”

“Well, I had a long week and I’m tired.”

“Scared I’ll tire you out even more?”

Hanni simply hummed at that. If he counted that strange rendezvous at the South Point Pier, this could be considered their third date. Hanni could hear Yasmeen’s voice in the back of his head going on and on about how important third dates were.
