CHAPTER NINETEEN

Outside the Maverick County Sheriff’s Police Station the weather had grown hot and Concho almost missed the manufactured coolness of the building’s interior. It still hadn’t stopped him from sweating through the underarms of his white shirt and feeling like he could use a shower. He extended his hand toward Spencer Givens.

“Thank you for representing me in there, sir. What do I owe you?”

The lawyer’s face crinkled with a wide grin.

“Nada,” he said, glancing at Captain Shaw. “It’s been taken care of.”

Concho looked at his boss, who waved his hands dismissively.

“The good counselor and I go way back,” Shaw said. “To an old traffic stop on a young attorney who’d had a bit too much to drink and was given a pass and driven home.”

This was a surprise to Concho.

Givens snorted.

“It would have been bad for my image had I been forced to represent myself in court,” he said. “Would have reinforced the old saying that an attorney who represents himself has a fool for a client.” Givens looked askance at Concho. “Something you should remember the next time you get involved in one of these things.”

“I’ll certainly think about that,” Concho said. “If there is a next time.”

“If?” Shaw snorted and rolled his eyes. “That’s like saying if my dog barks at the mailman again.”

After shaking hands, Shaw said he needed a word in private with Concho and Givens walked over and got into the passenger side of the captain’s SUV.

“I appreciate you looking out for me, Captain,” Concho said.

“Will you quit saying that?” Shaw’s mouth became a tight line. “I wasn’t just looking out for my top man, I was doing it for the Rangers. The damn feds getting involved in this was all political bullshit. They’re looking for an excuse to keep local and state agencies from policing the border.”

“Why’s that?”

Shaw shrugged.

“Probably because it’s calling too much attention to the situation there. Anyway, this shooting thing was bullshit, but it’s still going to take another day or so probably before you’re officially cleared.” He brought his extended index finger up and punched it against Concho’s chest as he added, “So you stay outta trouble. Got it?”

“Yes, sir.”

Shaw gave an emphatic nod and glanced over at the tow truck.

“And get rid of that damn thing, will ya? It’s giving the Rangers a bad name. Rent a damn car, or something, if you have to.”

“I’m working on it,” Concho said. “But I kind of like driving it. I’m actually thinking of maybe putting in a secondary employment request form.”

Shaw’s mouth dropped open and then he saw Concho chuckling. The captain snorted again, pulled up on his belt, and started heading for his SUV.

“I got to drive the esteemed counselor back to his office in San Antonio. I had somebody else pick him up early this morning, but I promised I’d buy him a steak dinner on the return trip.”

“Muchichimos gracias,” Concho said, thinking that the captain had told him not to say thank you anymore.

Shaw slapped his side and didn’t look back.
