Chapter Nine

When Winona turned her back on the trio and walked away, she went to the kitchen and out the back door. She hated the drama Dana created and knew Gunner and Boone weren’t happy with her at the moment. Sitting down on the back steps, she just looked out into the yard, seeing everything around her but not really seeing it as she stared at the horizon. She had wiped the tear that slipped out, but she didn’t cry. She vowed a long time ago that she wouldn’t cry anymore over things she couldn’t change and she knew there was no changing how Dana felt about her. It wasn’t her fault but she felt the rejection all the same. All her life she’d been rejected by someone who should have loved her and each time, it hurt until she built up a wall around her heart to protect her. She barely let Mrs. George past that high wall but when she did, she found herself accepting Mrs. George all the way.

Maybe that’s why when the older lady died and her family came to take everything, they got so mad when the old woman had left it all to her.

She didn’t know how much time had passed but Winona felt it when she tried to stand up. Her back hurt and she had tingles in her legs as the feelings were coming back awake when she stood up. Looking up toward the sun, she thought she’d been sitting there a couple of hours at any rate. Winona walked around, trying to relax her muscles so when she turned to go back inside she found Dana standing there in the doorway. Her arms were crossed over her chest and Winona could feel the rage emanating off her body.

Her twin’s eyes were narrowed and her lips were very tight.

Winona groaned internally but didn’t let Dana hear her. She held up her hand to stop Dana from going off on her again, “Don’t bother. Yes, I know you hate me, you wish I’d never come here, I’ll never fit into this life and you were born to it, you blame me for getting caught doing your own stupid shit and oh yes, let’s not forget you really hate me.” She glared at the other girl. “Well guess what sister? You aren’t my favorite person either.”

“I am not your sister,” Dana hissed at her. “You and I have nothing in common. How my father can be confused about that is anybody’s guess, but I am not your sister and I never will be.”

Winona shrugged. “Well, that subject is still up for debate isn’t it? I don’t think either of us has any say in the real facts.”

Dana stomped her foot and shouted, “I was doing just fine here until you came along! I’ve been the club princess all my life and now, you want to take that away from me. Well, I’m not going to let that happen, do you hear me? I’m not going to let that happen.
