Leaving no stone unturned, Detectives Dave Hoyle and Dave Wilson went to talk to Kara, Larry’s sister-in-law. They met her at a department store in Morton. While Kara talked to police, her husband, Jerry, sat in a car nearby. Kara said she had known Larry for about twenty-eight years. They met through mutual friends who lived in the Morton area.

The detectives asked her about Larry’s ex-wife, Cathy, but she said they had never met. She told police Larry and his brother had a rather rocky relationship. She said Larry used to beat up Jerry when they were kids, and Jerry didn’t take kindly to that.

“When you were teenagers, did you ever party at a place called the ‘broken bridge’?” Hoyle asked.

“Yeah, I used to party there when I was about twenty, and Larry used to be at the parties.”

Kara said she got along fine with Larry’s mother, although she felt that Shirley coddled Larry and was overly protective of him.

“Is there anything that indicated that Larry and his mother had a sexual relationship?”

“No, but they had an abnormal relationship.”

“Do you know if Larry has ever been with any black women?”

“When Larry used to live on McClure, Jerry caught him with a black girl one day,” she said. “You know, about a month ago, Shirley told me she thought Larry might have AIDS.”
