Chapter 11

New Year’s Eve

The past forty-eight hours passed in a blissful, sensual blur. Last night was spent much as the night before. Touching, caressing, and kissing every inch of her skin. Learning just how sensitive a woman’s breasts can be. How arousing it was to have a woman kiss and explore every part of his body. But tonight would be different.

First, Spencer decided after an afternoon of burying himself in research and seeing to the dogs’ comfort, he should pay a little attention to his own needs—and his appearance.

Unfortunately, he didn’t bring any formal clothing. Who would he dress for, the hounds? However, there was one pair of black trousers, a decent white shirt, and a white cravat he could use in a pinch. The gold waistcoat was not in the best of shape, sporting many frayed threads. It was in better condition than his black one, and more fitting for a special dinner. As far as a coat, he would forgo such, as the brown tweed wouldn’t match the rest of his garments.

Spencer snipped away as many loose threads as he could. Old habits die hard with regard to the current culture’s standards and mode of dress, even though he personally couldn’t give a toss. When he came of age, he refused the offer of a valet for he was capable enough of looking after himself. He preferred it. One positive experience from attending school: learning to stand on his own two feet—to an extent. And there was the fact that the thought of someone handling his belongings upset him. Notwithstanding, Spencer wanted to look his level best tonight.

Concentrating on the task at hand proved problematic, for the anticipation of sex would not leave his mind. While nervous, he looked forward to consummating the intimacy that had grown between them. The proof lay in the way his hand shook as he gripped the scissors. Would it be as cold, mechanical, and meaningless as his brothers hinted? Or as Phil experienced? Granted, Tremain and Harry said not all their experiences left them feeling empty. A select few were quite memorable.

Spencer hoped his first time would be—unforgettable. Now that he thought on it, his brothers’ bragging was exaggerated. Though they described their sexual exploits in salacious detail, he now understood that they were giving him instruction, preparing him so he would not act as a bumbling fool if and when he ever decided to embark on an affair.

His memory had always been sharp, and his organizational skills marveled many. He could retain vast amounts of information, which would come in handy for the task ahead. Only this wasn’t a task to him.

It meant everything.

Philomena McGrattan inflamed him as no other woman before. He would not have agreed to this if he didn’t already have deep feelings for her. How could it be possible after several days’ acquaintance?

Apparently, it was possible and Spencer would not deny or dismiss it. Something existed between them. Phil admitted it as well. Perhaps they would both exorcize the attraction from their systems tonight.
