Manner of Death

Death can occur for many reasons and in absolutely any situation. Yet, pathologically speaking, death falls into seven main causes: blunt force trauma, sharp force trauma, asphyxiation, gunshot, fire fatalities, drowning, and substance-related. Within these categories there are subcategories referred to as the manner of death: homicide, suicide, accidental, sex-related death, and the ever-boring death by natural causes. These are not “causes” in and of themselves, but situations where death occurs. For the medical examiner, it is important not only to describe what caused the person to die, but also the manner in which he died. By the way, in real life—meaning anything other than what’s on CSI—homicides comprise less than 1 percent of all cases.
