Released in the summer of 2020 Biffy Clyro’s eighth studio album, A Celebration of Endings, concludes with ‘Cop Syrup’. A masterpiece of unbridled energy, the song marries the faintest glimmer of pop music with the kind of commotion that can be corralled only by expert hands. ‘I’ve been saved from the darkest place,’ sings Simon Neil in its berserk opening section. Then, as if from nowhere, the track pivots into a three-minute and forty-seven-second instrumental section of such sublime fragility that one wonders how on earth it can be the same group, let alone the same song. In a piece of music that swells and builds like warm and welcome rains, the second act sees the three musicians joined by a keyboardist, a flutist, ten violinists, four cellists and three violists. One of the most remarkable pieces of music I’ve ever heard, to me this towering track says, ‘This, right here, this is the sound of our freedom. And look, just look what we’re able to do with it.’ By banding together, by working hard and keeping faith with one another through dark times, Biffy Clyro have mastered the talent and the courage required to embark on a road as uncharted as this. Seeking to find the limits of their capacious originality, in strengthening their common convictions, and by surviving the turmoil of life in a band, this – this – is what they created.

‘Music has saved my life,’ Simon Neil tells me. ‘When I’m writing songs, when I’m not worrying about anyone else, that’s when I’m at my happiest. When we’re playing, that’s when Ben and James and I are at our happiest. There’s just this disregard for the outside world and for everyone else. That’s where the “fuck everybody” [lyric] comes from. I don’t give a fuck. I’m in a moment of pure unadulterated happiness and I don’t give a fuck what anyone else says. It’s me saying that I’m proud of who I am. And I’m proud of what we’ve done.

‘This is who we are.’
