The walk through Ghost Jungle the next morning was awkward. I could not think of a better term used to describe it. The fact we were still hiking to Castle Bloodborne, but with prince Aspen joining us, was not what I had expected. The whole purpose of going in the beginning was to find the asshole prince and kill him, but now, we were going for an entirely new reason.

Cedric and Rafe stayed as close to my side as possible, making sure Aspen kept a reasonable distance from me. The possessive display had me rolling my eyes, but I also found it charming. I expected something like this from Cedric, but never would I have imagined this from Rafe. Being fated to one another has changed our perceptive of one another.

Thankfully, nobody spoke while we walked, which allowed me to replay everything Aspen had told me. I thought I could only survive in sunlight due to me being part fae, but how was it that Aspen could withstand it? Was it because he was connected to me? Was he protected by magic? Can any vampire hybrid survive in sunlight? That last question had me concerned. If it was possible, it could spell disaster for humans. There were ways of protecting themselves from the bloodsuckers, but their biggest advantage was never fearing of an attack while the sun was up. It turns out that advantage had an exception.

After what felt like hours of deafening silence, minus the crunching of leaves and twigs under our feet with every step we made, we spotted Toadmoor River. Once we crossed it, Dusk vale would be off to the left of the clearing, and we would be one step closer to the castle. We all stopped in front of the river, the current streaming off to the right, its end near Mount Pendragon. The water was a swampy green color due to the darkened atmosphere and algae underneath.

“How do we cross it?” Cedric asked, eyeing the water cautiously.

Rafe looked off to the left where the lake that connected with the river was father down. “Perhaps there’s a rock formation we can find and use to help us.”

Aspen groaned. “You two are so pathetic, it’s laughable.”

Cedric, Rafe, and I glared at him.

“Do you have a better idea?” Rafe barked out.

“Of course, I do,” Aspen smirked then used his vampire speed to jump over the current and land on the other side in one fluid motion. His features blurred when he jumped. He faced us, arms out as if to say, See? I told you so.

“Remind me again why he’s traveling with us? Could he not have just gone ahead and meet us at the castle?” Rafe muttered under his breath, but I knew Aspen could hear him.

I said, “At this point, I haven’t the slightest clue.”

Of course, we could jump but not all of us had the enhanced speed to achieve that feat.

As if reading my mind, Cedric sighed and said, “You and Rafe should jump on ahead.
