Chapter Seven

Mike tried not to give anything away as he walked out of the assembly, but he was angry that his plan had been left in tatters. Still, at least he was where he had always intended to be. Mitchum walked through the halls chatting about the great promise of their future and all the other students lapped it up. Mike looked at them with derision in his eyes. It wasn’t their fault that they took Mitchum’s word as gospel. They were blinded by the promise of what he could do for them, and they had no reason not to be excited. If he and Ms. Wicker had just been able to get to them first, to tell them the truth about the Academy and what Mitchum was really like, maybe they wouldn’t be so excited.

But Mitchum had intervened. He’d gotten there first, and everything was going according to his plan, because of course he needed to be in control. Mitchum was always in control. Mike had no idea if Mitchum knew about the plan being concocted against him, but so far, he hadn’t treated Mike differently than any of the others. Mike wondered if Mitchum even knew that he was the son of Daniel and Marie.

They were taken to a car waiting outside the Academy, which drove off as soon as they were all in. Mitchum sat in the front, and a dark screen separated the front of the car from the rear, in which the five students were huddled together. Mike knew a couple of them in passing, but they introduced each other quickly. There was Tommy, a tubby boy with round glasses, although even though he wore glasses he still seemed to have a permanent squint. Paul was a tall dark-skinned boy, quiet, with a soft voice. Julian was awkward and lanky, with a furtive gaze that darted about the other boys, and finally there was Liam, whose hair came down his face in curtains. He had narrow eyes and a wolfish smile.

“So, what do you think this is about? I didn’t even think I was doing that well in class,” Tommy said.

“I don’t think it’s about the grades. There’s always been something different about the Academy. They take more than grades into account,” Liam said. “Besides…I think we all know why we’re really here.” He looked around with a pointed gaze, but still everyone was too afraid to admit to each other the truth, all because it had been hammered into them that secrecy was of the utmost importance. Everyone in the car was eighteen and had undergone the first shift.

“Are none of you going to say it?” Liam asked.

Mike was up to the challenge. “We’re all wolves,” he said. Liam studied him and smiled, seemingly impressed that Mike would say it so openly. The other boys looked at each other and seemed worried, afraid that now it had been said something dark and dangerous would happen.

But nothing did.

“You actually said it,” Julian gasped.

“I don’t think as many bad things are going to happen as they suggest,” Mike said bitterly.
