The remainder of the journey was uneventful. They covered the distance to the coast in a little over two weeks, marking off likely sites for waystations on Stark’s map, negotiating deals for fodder and team changes where they found settlements. There were not many—no more than three along the whole distance—for this part of Texas was thinly populated, given over mostly to the buffalo that were beginning to drift down from the north to browse the luxuriant grasslands.

And then they were approaching the coast. The tang of salt was in the air and ahead of them they saw the shimmering expanse of the Gulf of Mexico, Brownsville spread along the shoreline like a flimsy barrier between ocean and land.

‘We made it,’ Thorn grunted as they entered the town.

‘We made half of it,’ McLain corrected. ‘We still got to get back.’
