A page from Vance’s diary describes the bomb that was put in his car. Courtesy of the Vance family
His screams brought Ethel Vance running. She called for their son Tom to phone police and helped her husband back into the house where she applied water and baking soda to the burns. A few drops of acid penetrated through his fingers and burned his right eyebrow, but the worst burns were on his legs. The acid had eaten through his trousers, which now hung off him in shreds. The burns on his left knee and both hands and legs felt like they were on fire.
Sergeant Alex McAfee answered the police call and was at the Vance house within minutes. Seeing the seriousness of Vance’s injuries, McAfee put Vance in the police car and rushed him to Vancouver General Hospital. Vance was treated in emergency and later moved to a private ward where a police officer stood guard all night.
