Shelby was not pleased to see him.
The doctorâs face was a mess of bruises, and he moved bent over. Like a man badly hurt around the sides and belly.
âWhat happened?â Azul stepped into the house before Shelby got a chance to close the door. âWho beat you up?â
Shelby winced through the spread of his swollen lips.
âDan Fogarty. Who the hell dâyou think? Him anâ his hired guns.â
âHeâs two short now,â Azul grinned. âI guess it was you told them about me?â
Shelby nodded. âI wasnât left much choice. Whoâd you kill? Bulmer anâ Hook?â
Azul nodded.
âThought they hadnât been around much lately,â said Shelby. âBut you still got Cyrus Rack to handle. Heâs meanerân the other two set together.â
âWhen the time comes.â Azul left the sentence open, floating.
Shelby looked at him. âYeah. I even believe you could. Meanwhile, what the hell you want? If Fogarty hears youâve been to see me, Iâm in a whole lotta fresh trouble.â
âYour problem,â grunted Azul; succinctly. âI need morphine.â
âFor Jody?â Shelby got a look of professional concern over the raw fear on his face. âIf he ainât pulled through by now, heâs dead.â
âNo.â Azul shook his head. âHe might live if he gets morphine.â
âI donât have that much.â Shelby poured himself a drink. Tossed it down in one fast swallow, and filled his glass a second time. âBesides, if Fogarty heard I sold you the stuff Iâd be in real trouble.â
Azul smiled. It was a cold and lonely smile. It accentuated the bleak planes of his face, emphasizing his Apache heritage, and transforming his features into an ugly, menacing mask.
Shelby downed his second drink and went pale. He put the glass on the table and stepped over to his cabinet. âMorphine! Right. You know how much?â
âEnough to take a man through an operation.â Azul banked on fear to control the doctorâs supply. âAllow for a little more. And give me the right amounts or Iâll come back and kill you.â
Shelby licked his lips. Sweat broke out on his forehead and began to trickle over the bruises around his cheeks and mouth. He unlocked the cabinet and produced two bottles of clear fluid. Then he found a hypodermic syringe in a leather case, and set the whole bundle on the table. âMake sure you wash the needle.â He tapped the case. âThereâs a spare inside. Need washing before itâs used, too. Do it in boiling water, then use alcohol.â
âCome and show me,â Azul said. âYouâre the doctor.â
Shelby shook his head: âOnly so long as I stay alive. If Fogarty knew I was helping you, heâd have me killed.â
âYouâre that afraid?â Azul asked. âYou let him run this town?â
âHe owns it,â said Shelby. âGrants from the government have made him the biggest cattleman around. He owns Mengers like most people own a horse. Jesus! Poor old Johnny Mengers donât own a pocket of his own. He couldnât pull a sock on without checking his pockets first, in case Fogarty left a message there.â
âHeâs still the law,â Azul said. âWhy donât he call in a U.
