Moses Calhoun explained to Aka Ne'ai the reason for his visit to the Snake winter camp.
They sat in a much smaller teepee. It was cold in there. Though Kee Nangkawitsi Tekaiten built a small fire in the center and there were bearskin rugs for them to sit on, the teepee was already cold when they first came in, and it was not so packed with people that it quickly warmed. While he waited for the fire to grow and begin to warm the teepee, Moses Calhoun sat with his bearskin coat draped over his shoulders.
He told her about Eli Simmons coming to him. He told her about the soldiers who took him prisoner. He told her that her father wanted her to come to him in the town.
Kee Nangkawitsi Tekaiten â Silent Hunter in English â listened to all that Moses said to his wife, sometimes asking her to explain a word or a phrase or a thought that he did not understand.
When Moses was finished with his story, the man and woman spoke at length in their native tongue. Their conversation turned heated a couple of times, but Aka Ne'ai did not persist in arguing with her husband. Then, after some time, she turned back to the man they knew as Cougar Killer, Tekaiten Toi-yah'-to'-ko.
"Silent Hunter says I must go with you," Aka Ne'ai said. "He wants me to take the children and go to my father, and he said he will come for me in the spring."
Moses nodded. He knew that the woman had protested against it, and he knew that the decision to leave her husband to an unknown fate caused her deep pain.
"In the spring, if Silent Hunter comes to Cougar Killer, will Cougar Killer take him to the town where my father lives?"
Calhoun nodded.
"Of course I will," he said.
"They will not leave the camp," Aka Ne'ai said. She spoke quickly, and softly, so that her husband would not catch her words, and Moses knew that this was a conversation between her and him, her husband did not know what she was saying. "They will trust the snow to pile so high that the soldiers cannot come. But the snow in the meadow, it melts now."
Tears rolled silently down the woman's cheeks.
"Anything can happen," Moses said, not knowing what else to say. "Maybe they will move the camp higher into the mountains."
She shook her head.
"They will not move. I know their moods. The young men, like my husband, they want to fight. The old men, they are tired from running."
Moses nodded. He understood the perspective of both, and he could not blame either. But he knew, too, that the Snake People would be destroyed if they stayed to face the soldiers.
"Maybe the snow will come," he said.
