Chapter Nine

The sound of his boots on the tile floor announced that Jack Harden had arrived at Parkland Hospital. He ducked as he entered the waiting room, dropped his hat onto the table, and sat next to Moses Browner. “So, what is this about, Moses?”

“I can’t say that I know, Jack. I heard some of the Dallas PD people taking about it, and I tried to call you.”

“Yeah, I’ve been in Bandera. I didn’t get the message until we got back to the copter in Kerrville. You brought Elsie?”

“She’s in with the girl and her mother now. The stepfather came later, but the cops took him downtown to get his statement.”

“He pulled her out of the pool?”

“That’s what I heard, Jack, but I don’t really know. I’m not a detective, you know. Apparently, I am more of a taxi driver, who ferries pregnant women to the hospital when they can’t find their husbands. I trust you will not expect me to do this again when that baby comes.”

Jack smiled. “I hope not, but, as you are always reminding me, you are a doctor. Maybe you would do it for free.”

“Only you would think of that.” He stood and brushed imaginary dust from his trouser. “Well, then, I suppose I can be on my way now, that is, unless you would like me to stay and drive you both back home.”

“I asked Ted Bennett to take Elsie home. He should be here in a few minutes. I’m going to the Sullivan house to follow up on some information we got from Gail Matthews. I think there’s something going on in that house, but I can’t put my finger on it.”

“Perhaps that is because you have a puerile brain, one not trained in the finer matters of human behavior.”

“Do you think you could do better?”

“Oh, I’m sure of it.”

“Good, then you can come with me.”

“Now, I didn’t mean to volunteer. I’m just saying my brain is better developed in those matters.”

“Yeah, right, I’ll meet you downstairs in ten minutes. First, I need to see Chelsea. What room is she in?”

Moses pointed toward the door. “Straight across the hall. You can’t miss it.”
