Chapter 17

The next morning, Benny discovered there had been another death in the family, that of his beloved beast, the old Ford Focus that he’d had for nearly a year that was his first ever car, always special to a young man. For weeks, the red warning light that would flash sporadically had been ignored by Benny, partly due to preferring to do other things, partly believing that the vehicle would soon be replaced by his mother for his birthday, but the beast had given up on itself before the new car had arrived.

‘Fuck it,’ Benny said, slumping down into the driver’s seat and looking at himself in the mirror. ‘What now? We’ve decided to do it. We can’t back out now.’

Benny had made a decision. Or the voice in his head had. Benny had been on the phone that morning to the psychiatric unit that held his grandmother. She was still alive, although she hadn’t said many a word in years. The staff warned Benny that it would likely be a waste of his time coming to visit Lily Green, but he wouldn’t be told. Drifting off to sleep the night before, Benny and his alter ego had firmly concluded that meeting the Phantom was the next logical step for Benny, a young man who had no clear direction in life and an unhealthy yearning to learn about the darker side of his family. He picked up his phone and dialed a number.

‘Hello, boy,’ Tank answered.

‘Hey, big man, I need a favour.’

It took a little convincing from Benny to get Tank out of the bed he was sharing with one of his girlfriends to come and drive Benny to Berkshire, to the west of London, but when Benny explained who his grandmother was, the notorious killer, the Phantom, Tank was both excited and intrigued and agreed to come and collect his gym buddy.

‘What do you mean I can’t come in with you?’ asked a disgruntled Tank, as they drove down toward Broadmoor Hospital.

‘They said it’s just one visitor at a time and just family as well,’ Benny lied, wanting to keep this special treat for himself. ‘What do you want to see her for anyway?’

‘She’s a killer. She’s taken lives like me, Benny boy,’ Tank said, ‘you wouldn’t understand, never having killed someone. She and I have got something in common. Not being funny, mate, but if she’s as bad-ass as the press made her out to be, she’ll take one look at you and laugh. I remember this all playing out when I was a kid. She’ll eat you for breakfast, boy.’

Benny decided that boasting he was also a killer wasn’t a good idea, so let Tank continue to think he knew what the hell was talking about.

‘She won’t eat me for breakfast, Tank, she must be old and weak by now,’ Benny said, thoughtfully, ‘she won’t be the same person who terrorized London all those years ago. Nearly twenty years locked up is bound to change a person, especially at that age.
