They quit Dragonsville that same afternoon, preferring to catch the Kiowa trail while it was still hot.

It led down towards the Colorado River, where they found the remnants of a temporary camp. The signs indicated a whole tribal clan on the move, women and dogs and children accompanying the warriors, with travois drawn behind the women’s ponies. Five miles south of Dragonsville they found sign of Mahka himself.

A Kiowa lance was imbedded deep in the ground, tufts of eagle feathers fluttering in the breeze. Three scalps decorated the lance, blood dripping from the circular patches of skin so that the hair hung limp, held down by the weight of blood and flies and ants.

The butt of the lance was ground into the severed neck of a white man. The head gaped blood-sticky jaws towards Dragonsville, hanging open where the tendons and muscles had been cut through. The eyes were gouged out, an arrow stuck into the left socket. Around the base of the lance there were two hands, cut off at the wrists and placed crossways towards the trail, palms upwards.

Flies and ants fought for position on the severed hands, each species anxious to secure the unusual delicacies that rested on the palms.

Pointing back at Dragonsville like a bloody insult were the genitals of the dead man, cupped in his sticky fingers to mingle with the blood of his wrists and neck.

‘Mean bastard, ain’t he?’ grunted John Havee. ‘That’s a sign I ain’t seen in a long time. Says to keep clear o’ him.’

‘I guessed that,’ said Azul slowly. ‘But I don’t intend to let it stop me. What’s the arrow mean?’

Havee shrugged. ‘Could be he didn’t like the feller’s face, though I’d guess it means he’s headed into Mexico. Points that way, at least. I’d reckon he got word from Buffalo Runner, so he’s challengin’ us: Come on after if you dare.’

‘I do,’ said Azul. ‘I gave Horn a promise, so I’m followin’ on. You coming with me?’

Havee shrugged again. ‘Why not? I ain’t got much else to do just now.’

‘Then let’s go,’ rasped Azul. ‘We took the man’s money, now let’s go make our markers good.’
