âThis is a mess. What are we going to do with all these bodies?â Burn sounded like a novice to killing, like he hadnât been hanging with the Cursed King for probably a solid decade and had at least a bucket of blood on his hands.
âCan you manage to get past your shock and awe and help me search them? Letâs see if we can find something that tells us who they are.â I was already on my third corpse, checking pockets and avoiding fleshy bits, while Burn tiptoed around the place like he was afraid to stain his boots.
âBurn.â I called his name as a teacher would to an errant student. And people said spying was bad? If I hadnât spent all those hours peeking through the school room window in the Valley, I never wouldâve mastered the tone that got Burn moving.
He bent down by the nearest body, using two fingers to lift a jacket away from a shirt. âThen what? Do we leave them out here?â
âI donât know. I havenât thought that far.â I glanced over from my fourth body while he worked on his first and looked like heâd be there a while.
A small smile lit his face. âMaybe we should torch them?â
I ignored the part of that suggestion that made my stomach flip-flop and focused on the man whoâd turned into a large kid acting as if heâd discovered a new toy.
âThe torch was very cool, but Iâm not sure a bonfire of bodies would be better than leaving them as is. Their friends who got away will be back. Weâre already late, and I donât want to draw more attention to us than the big demon in the field mightâve.â
I was on my sixth body and still hadnât found anything. It wasnât like people usually walked around with identifying objects, but there wasnât even a coin to hint at an origin. It was as if they were told to empty their pockets before they attacked. How had they planned this when weâd only decided to come last night? Had they been lying in wait for days hoping? Figuring weâd eventually come this way in search of clues? My gut had screamed that this was a bad idea from the start, and now it was chanting, I told you so.
âYouâre worried about being late?â Burn asked, still by the same body.
âYes, I am. Theyâll never get to the right place without me.â
I stood, trying to figure out which bodies I hadnât checked yet, when I felt Ryker nearing. He broke through the line of trees looking ready for war and scouring the area for an enemy to kill. His eyes scanned me and then took in the carnage around us.
He stopped beside the first dead body he came to and then looked at us. âWhat the fuck happened?â
âWe got ambushed,â I said, stating the obvious.
Burn took the opportunity to stop searching. âThought we were fucked for sure when this demon-looking thing dropped down out of nowhere and killed most of them.
