A little while later, they’d taken a rental car—a fancy bright yellow Hummer—from the heliport nearby guest shuttle service kiosk to a shopping plaza with a holiday boutique. Laney had seemed to have a hard time relaxing in the Hummer, her eyes wide at the experience, he’d noticed. However, when he found some Christmas music on the stereo, she started singing along to all the tunes as he navigated them through traffic.

The store had a huge Christmas department, and although they found plenty of ribbon, wreaths, and decorations, they had yet to find a gold Christmas star for the top of the main tree for the tree lighting ceremony.

“Wanna go to the craft store on the other side of the parking lot?” he asked, seeing the disappointment in her eyes after they checked out and stood near the main doors with their purchases.

She nodded. “Can we, please?”

“Right this way, Mademoiselle Johnson,” he joked with a wink, his arm held open indicating the direction they should head toward. “We’ll drop these packages off in the Hummer and drive over there. This is a huge shopping center and we need all the time we can save.”

“Sounds great.” She smiled up at him as she pulled her leather gloves on, appearing excited at the prospect. “You’re sure they have a large Christmas décor selection? We just have to find a giant gold star—one that lights up and is all gold and glittery, you know? Our tree lighting ceremony won’t be right without it.”

“You’ll love it,” he assured as he guided her toward their vehicle. “They usually have everything.”
