I was a bit annoyed to read that. After looking forward to meeting him all evening, he’d canceled without any explanation.

RealDeal: Care to explain me why?

I was irritated and tired. Meeting SaltNPepper was long overdue.

SaltNPepper came online and the three dots indicating he was typing popped up. I waited for his response, but the three dots disappeared, and SaltNPepper went offline again.

I furrowed my brows. Why was I having such bad luck in these things? First Slade, now SaltNPepper. I should just give up and focus on what I was good at, which was working in the restaurant. If SaltNPepper was going to leave me hanging like that, maybe I should hang out with Slade. I knew there was a chance Slade was going hurt me again. It was like touching the stove over and over again, even after getting burned. But after such a long day at The Lady York, all I wanted was to be with someone. Anyone. I decided to call my roommate, who was always up for hanging out, especially when I was feeling down.

I called Ian and waited for him to pick up.

“Hello?” Ian answered.

“Hey, are you free tonight?” I asked.

“Where are you?”

“Just finished work. I’m still at the restaurant.”

“How was the grand opening? Frankie and I walked by earlier and saw how busy it was.”

“I’m exhausted. Is there a chance you’re at home right now?”

“Why? Did you forget your keys?”

“No, just want someone to talk to.”

“Aww. Rough day at work?” Ian asked.

“More so boy problems than work problems.”

“I’m...actually out with Frankie right now. We just finished watching a movie and we’re going to get some late-night food. Why don’t you join us?”

“I don’t want to be a third wheel,” I said.

“Don’t be silly. We’re all friends here.”

I didn’t want to tell Ian that the last thing I wanted was to be hanging out with the two of them together because it’d only remind me of how single I was.

“You guys have fun. I’ll just go home and eat ice cream while binge-watching Netflix.”

“I’ll be there in a couple hours,” Ian said. “Are you going to be okay?”

“Yeah, I think so.”

Slade stepped out of the restaurant.

“I have to go,” I said to Ian. “I’ll see you later.”

“Later,” Ian said before hanging up.

“Ready to go?” Slade asked.

I nodded.

Slade led me to his Porsche, and I got into the passenger seat.

Being next to Slade made me unable to sit still. I could smell his musky scent. I could feel the heat of his body next to me. After working in the kitchen for eight hours, we were both still overheated.

Slade headed in the direction of my apartment.

“You know where to go?” I asked.

“Of course,” Slade said. “You think I’d forget where you live?”

“You only drove me there once.”

“But I remember it because it was where I kissed you for the very first time.”

“Why are you even bringing the kiss up?” I asked, letting out a sigh.

I was tired. Tired after a grueling day. Tired of Slade stringing me along.
