Chapter 17

River

"I don't ever want to know, oh oh — "

"You need to stop singing along." I say, laughing so hard I might have to pull over.

Since I picked up Blaze this morning, he promptly took over the radio and let it stop at a country station. I've got nothing against country music. I do, however, need Blaze to stop singing. He's not horrible by any means, but sometimes he tries to make me laugh, hitting high notes and singing the wrong words.

Then he smiles that smile that's only for me and I have trouble concentrating on the road. So really, he's putting our lives in danger by singing.

"You wound me, River."

He flicks off the radio with a grin. "Okay, no more singin'. Tell me about this master sleigh builder."

"Right, his name is Jorge and his wife is Anna. He's a second generation Portuguese immigrant, and he's an amazing builder. His dad had a construction company when they first came to Canada. Jorge learned from him."

"Wow, so he's been doin' it a long-time then. Did you ever work with him?"

"I did. Just after my mom died, I finally left the house to get a job and Jorge's dad hired me right away. I helped with custom cabinets for a few months and his dad taught me so much."

Signalling to a side road, my truck leaves the pavement and we continue along a gravel country road. Fields, trees and livestock keep us company for the rest of the way.

"That's really cool. Do you keep in touch?"

"A little. Since Anna got sick, he's busy with the kids and his parents live with him too now. With all that and working to keep the cash coming in, he hasn't had time for social things. I try to call him every few months, just to let him know I still think of him. Which I do, but he never wants to ask for help. If I offer, he almost always declines it."

"What would he do if you just helped and didn't offer? Would he be offended?"

Mulling it over, I'm not sure what Jorge would do. He's such a proud man, and he respects what his dad built for them after coming here. But he's also ashamed for the business floundering for the same reason. He couldn't have predicted his wife getting sick and that had to take priority.

"I'm not really sure, actually."

Blaze gazes out the window as we travel in silence, and I know he's likely cooking up a way to help. If there's one thing about him I admire, it's his want to always try to make a situation better for someone. While he doesn't like to advertise he has money, I know it bothers him to just have it when someone else needs it. But even if it's a problem that can't be solved with money, Blaze is still one actively trying to find a solution.

It's honestly my favourite thing about him. Okay, that's not totally true. It's probably all those little smile lines around his eyes when he smiles big.
