Chapter Twelve

The Mourning Alien Teens

It was the beginning of July and Inock was back in Unatia, at the conclusion of another AVC meeting. Inock was in a really good mood because he and Andre had a full four weeks off school. Though, he wasn’t too happy that the summer holidays were not as long as they were in the previous school years.

Inock cornered Kano and Chris to ask them about the elusive boy Maliki and where he might be hiding. It was actually the only reason he decided to show up for the meeting at all since they lost his Demon’s Amulet of Power. Otherwise, he might not have come.

‘We haven’t seen Maliki since the last time you saw him too, Inock, we told you,’ Kano explained gently. ‘Maybe you could ask his brother Lonathan, the mortuus.’

I should mention, in Inock’s realm, sometimes when non-identical twins were born to a demon, the twin that came out first got all the power and the twin that came out last was completely powerless; the mortuus.

When Inock asked where he could find Lonathan, Kano gave him an address in the city.

Inock left the abandoned theatre on the double and took a green and black taxi to the address.

The taxi ride was only ten minutes, but Inock was so anxious to get to the bottom of the matter that it felt longer. The driver stopped on a quiet street; Inock thanked and paid the man then got out of the car and went up to and knocked on the black door.

A boy of about nineteen with similar features to Maliki and a sad face answered the door.

‘Hello, can I help you?’ the boy asked in a dull, lifeless voice.

‘Yes, I think you might be able to,’ Inock said. ‘I’m looking for Maliki. Are you Lonathan?’

‘Yes, I am, but I haven’t seen Maliki for a long time. What do you want with him? What’s he done?’

‘Oh, it’s nothing. He just took something of mine and I really need it back.’

‘Who are you?’

‘My name is Inock. I met Maliki through the AVC.’ Then more quietly: ‘The Anti-Venator Clan. You know them?’

‘Oh … them!’ Lonathan did not sound too pleased at hearing about the AVC. It seemed he had a grudge with them.

Inock was desperate.

‘Could you help me find him please?’ he asked. ‘The thing he took from me is really important to me!’

Lonathan seemed to consider Inock’s plea for a moment or two; then his face cleared, and he said, ‘Next time I see him I’ll ask him about—what was it he took?’

‘It’s a Demon’s Amulet of Power. Just tell him, he’ll know what it is.’

‘Oh … well, I’m not really involved in those things, but I’ll ask him anyway when I see him.’

Thinking, Inock decided to give the boy his address in Kasama Market so he could find him should he hear from Maliki; he was very desperate after all.

As Inock walked away from the door, Lonathan had one final thing to say to him.

‘Maliki is dangerous and is not to be trusted!’ the boy called out.
