Chapter 18

BUT SAGE DID WORRY about the old goat. She secluded herself in the office with the door open, so she could hear Granny if she woke up. She used the time wisely. By the time the old woman woke two hours later, Sage had filled several empty grocery bags with old papers that should have been thrown out years ago. She’d burn them in the barrel that evening.

As she worked, she thought about Donald and their disturbing conversation. If Ross really owed that clown fifteen thousand dollars, it meant old Donald wasn’t just selling nickel bags. He had an operation going. And if Ross was buying that much pot, he was doing something with it that might or might not be linked to the boat she may or may not have seen the other night. Which could explain that great wad of cash in the envelope near her right knee. Or not. On one level, Sage found Donald’s revelation and its implications deeply disturbing. On the other, if one distanced oneself just a little, it presented an interesting conundrum. What became of all that marijuana? And who was behind it?

The scene she had witnessed at the boathouse came to mind. She was certain it was real. It still felt real. Could she trust herself? She was glad she was sober today. Her relapse had lasted only a few days, but her body had gone back to craving alcohol like she’d never quit. So far, she hadn’t suffered major withdrawal symptoms as she had when she’d quit cold turkey a few weeks ago. But she was still new at this. By the time five o’clock came around, she was aching for a drink. Aching was too mild a word. She was ready to gnaw off her left foot.

She heard her grandmother stirring. Time to get her up and cook a meal. Sage took a deep breath, walked into Granny’s bedroom, and opened the curtains. Then she stepped near the bed. “How are you doing, Granny?” she asked, surprised at the softness in her own voice.

Granny rolled her red-rimmed eyes to meet Sage’s. “Well I’m fine, Susan. Did you get that laundry done?”

“It’s all done, Granny.” Sage didn’t bother to correct her. It only led to more confusion. “Time to get up and move around a bit.” She helped Granny to a sitting position, and then to a stand. They made their way to the bathroom.

“Whatever happened to that cowboy?” Granny asked as they toddled across the floor.

“Which cowboy?” said Sage. She was barely paying attention.

“Who do you think I’m talking about?” Granny demanded. “The one who got you pregnant!”

Holy shit! Sage stopped abruptly, and Granny stumbled. She quickly grabbed the old woman, so she wouldn’t fall.

My father? Ross’s? “I can’t remember what he looked like,” Sage said.

Granny waved her free arm in the air. “Oh, you remember. That tall, red-haired boy. Useless as tits on a bull.”

Sage’s hopes momentarily soared. They were talking about her father! “I forget his name,”
