Chapter 19

When Lauren pulled up to the north dock, the beach was already abuzz with tractors and work-crews. There was a single large tug-boat waiting at the end of the pier. The second tug would be working out of the south dock. A helicopter circled above, Lacey Chase, herself, narrating moment-to-moment, the lone network granted air-clearance.

The beach was roped-off as the whales were prepped and readied to be towed, attached by ropes, with crews digging out the wet sand beneath them.

Sightseers gathered along the fenced-off perimeter, but Kate clearly had the support of more than just the city, because Lauren saw state cops working crowd control.

Lauren was impressed and outraged in almost equal measures.

Kate had set this up in two days. It was amazing what money and connections could get done.

Besides the tugs, there was the production's showpiece, the Hawaiian showboat with its underwater windows. This would house the VIP party – celebrities and ticketed guests.

There were, however, also two smaller boats buzzing around between, neither over twenty-five feet – both overloaded with camera equipment and five people deep.

These little out-boards seemed in defiance of Kate's promise of 'bigger boats'.

Lauren wondered if they believed the ecology was like a special effect that could be trusted to wait for its cue.

Kate, apparently having accepted Lauren's indentured presence, made another attempt to bring her on-board.

“Try to imagine seeing this as a Hollywood-level production. The biggest sharks, off the most dangerous beach. The biggest feeding frenzy ever. It's going to be spectacular.”

Lauren kept her voice even. She was here on orders, but those orders were to provide her expertise.

“It's unethical,” she said. “It's also recklessly invasive. You are artificially creating an ecological event for a promotional stunt.”

“I think ecological event is a bit dramatic.” Kate shook her head as if Lauren was somehow not seeing her point. “This event will last a few days, tops. It's a non-lethal solution to your shark-problem. The whale carcasses won't stink up the beaches and won't go to waste.”

Kate smiled. “And if it just happens to make us a zillion bucks? Well, we're the good guys, right?”

Lauren sighed.

“Excuse me, but doesn't this sound nauseatingly exploitive? Even to you?”

Kate turned on her, one hand on her hip.

“Excuse me,” she said, “but isn't there an entire film series starring a bunch of sharks and your bare ass?”

Behind her, Nancy chirped.

Lauren blinked. She bit down her immediate reply.

Kate took a long pause, giving Lauren a careful, appraising look.

Lauren found she was caring less by the moment about her job.

In fact, she kind of wanted to punch this bitch.

Instead, Lauren remained dutifully silent.

Satisfied, Kate turned to Nancy, thrusting her bag into her hands.

“Here, carry this.”

Nancy caught the heavy duffel with a startled 'whoof'.

“Okay,” Kate said, squaring her shoulders and nodding down to the docks. “Let's go to work.”
