CHAPTER ELEVEN

LOS ANGELES

After the goblin and wolf had finished their messy feast we needed to determine where the hell we’d landed. All cell phones had been lost in the ocean when the Sea Giant had destroyed my boat so we couldn’t pinpoint our location. That’s if cell phones even worked anymore. None of us knew yet how much the world had been affected by the evil presence of the red moon.

“We in California,” said Nokk. He wiped the Griffin’s blood and bits of gray matter from his mouth. “This is California beach.”

“But where exactly? Near what city?” I asked. “Your uncle Gmok was last seen in Los Angeles. That’s where we need to be.”

“I sorry.” The goblin shrugged. “Don’t know.”

“Shit,” said Skye. “This isn’t Rocket Science. I’m a California girl. All we have to do is keep walking until we see a sign. We can’t be that far from a city. Follow me.”

Gretchen stayed in pure wolf form and our group began the journey from the shore in search of civilization. I agreed with Skye that once we entered any city it should be easy to navigate our way to Los Angeles.

The beach appeared to be abandoned but that didn’t mean some monster or fucking bloodsucker wasn’t hiding and waiting to ambush us. I was absolutely sick of running away from fights so I hoped to see a vampire and not some ancient giant creature that was immune to my black magic.

Our clothes were damp from the ocean swim except for Gretchen who’d simply shaken all the saltwater from her fur. The wolf and goblin had just filled their bellies with raw Griffin brains but Skye and I still required some form of nourishment. Hopefully we’d find a store, restaurant, or home that wasn’t raided by looters and remained stocked with supplies. We also needed to acquire a vehicle in case the Priesthood’s dungeon in Los Angeles wasn’t nearby. That demon-infested torture chamber and prison for sex slaves was the last place we’d seen Gmok alive.

“Look!” shouted Skye. “Told you I knew where to go.” The werebear pointed to a small lifeguard tower stationed in the sand. On the side of the blue wooden tower a large number 20 was painted with the label South Ponto Beach underneath. I wondered if we’d find any food or water inside.

“This beach is close to San Diego,” said Skye. “We’re less than two hours from L.A.”

“Stay here and keep watch.” I instructed Gretchen and the goblin to wait outside while Skye and I entered the tower. We began to search through desk drawers and shelves but the room was basically empty. A few medical supplies, floatation devices for the ocean, and colored flags. Last but not least I found some bottled water and chocolate energy bars that we quickly consumed.

“Hey, you think I didn’t notice that bullshit earlier?” asked Skye.

“Notice what?”

“That Gretchen got a kiss from you.”

“So?”

“So where’s mine?” she demanded.

I grinned and kissed the werebear but only after she’d reversed her animal-like lips, teeth, and tongue back to fully human.
