Bitsy’s Wisdom 17: The layer of pink just under the surface of the meat is called a smoke ring. It runs from the outside in and the deeper the better.

At first she thought she must be dreaming. Katy had been drawn out into the storm by the dark billowing clouds on the horizon. It was the waning moments before the sun, now hidden behind clouds, disappeared beneath the world completely. She walked out into the rain, just because it felt good. It had been a perfect day, she thought, or as near perfect as an ordinary Sunday could be. A wonderful, welcoming church service, a tasty picnic lunch in the park and the excitement of the music nights they were planning, to give the new Bitsy’s some of the fun from the old days.

Katy felt grateful. Blessed, protected, grateful. She walked out to the railing, admiring the beauty of the storm and the gift of the rain. She held her arms out to it, receiving it. She wasn’t an overtly religious person, but she knew how fortunate she was to have her life, her son, her sister and this place to live full of kind friends and relative security. The loss and grief of her divorce still stung her, but she wouldn’t give in to disappointment and fear. Her heart was full of gratitude. She closed her eyes and laughed aloud, hoping that her thankfulness and the joy she felt would be transmitted to all angels in heaven watching over her.

It was then that she felt it. That primeval sense that had saved her ancestors from predators, the sense that she was being watched. The hairs on the back of her neck stood and her eyes, slitted, focused, searched the open ground along the lakeshore.

Then she saw him.

He was as familiar as her own body. And the sight of him was so unexpected, she was sure it must be an illusion. She drank in the vision eagerly, expecting any moment to be awakened to another morning without him. Then she felt cold, sharp prickles of the rain against her skin, and was assured that it was really happening. Sean was really there and he was looking straight at her.

Katy turned and fled. It wasn’t enough to get out of sight or into the kitchen, she raced all the way to the living room where Josh and Emma were sitting together on the rug playing Uno Junior. They were both startled by her abrupt entry.

“Are you all right?”

“What’s wrong, Mom?”

Katy opened her mouth to speak but hesitated, glancing first at her son and then at Emma.

“Ah…nothing, nothing,” she answered him, managing a smile that was so faked it nearly strained her face muscles. “Josh, isn’t it about time for you to be in bed?”

The child looked momentarily puzzled and then glanced at the digital clock on the radio and laughed.

“Mom, it’s only six o’clock,” he told her. “I’m not a baby that goes to bed at six o’clock.”

“Oh, right,” Katy said, flustered.
