Ratula sat on his hind legs at the crest of a low rise, silhouetted against a white smear of backlit clouds that concealed the moon. It was a good vantage point to spot his approaching contact, and to give her the false assurance that he was alone.

The biteclan woman from Fenris had howled to him from a clearing below the trees, and he sounded his response as one of his aides went to meet her there. She had retreated slightly at the sight of him, but then must have thought better of it. Together they disappeared into the trees, and emerged minutes later , this time a yard in front of him.

The aide motioned his assurance that no one followed her, and Ratula nodded to dismiss him. She stepped forward cautiously, in her muzzle a bundle that reeked of their pack. He motioned to the ground before him, and she placed it at his feet.

“This is the target, then? The pack den?” he asked.

She nodded, clearing her lupine throat. “T-treetops.”

“Yes. Treetops Howl.” He ferreted out a set of papers from inside the bundle, fanning them out on the floor with paws and looking them over. “Biteclan, I’m going to need you to speak.”

The biteclan were always apprehensive of taking human form again, around his kind. He could see her hesitation, so he fetched a blanket from his own bundle and tossed it to her. She shrouded herself with it before shifting.

“It’s a map of the layout,” she said. “No one’s going back there until Solstice.”

“Ah, but she comes there. You told me before. The pack sends her with some others who train your young. An extra precaution because you sense something coming.” He snickered. “How right you actually are.”

“I fulfilled our bargain, tomwolf.” Her voice was a mix of contempt and shame.

Ratula glanced around the clear cut between the trees on the ridge where they stood. Then he took another blanket for himself and decided to smein for this meeting.

They sat facing each other, like two strangers who had just shared a dalliance under the night sky.

This was the form he had first taken to meet her in the nightclub. How he had looked when they had danced on a much warmer night next to someone the humans called a DJ, someone with a pair of turntables. His beard was far more manicured these days then he had ever kept it in the old country, and his hair even sported elegant frosted tips. That entire night she hadn’t taken her eyes off his shape, and she had howled in despair when she saw his true from the next morning. Tonight she could barely make eye contact with him.

“You have fulfilled your bargain, biteclan, when I say you have fulfilled it.” He studied the papers once more. “But for now, your secret is safe with us. An aide will leave a message at your home the evening that we are to strike. I cannot be accountable if you are there to receive it or if your son finds it in your place.
